I have been doing some research on ideas to help me see to the right when driving my left hand Motorhome when I am at a junction or roundabout and can’t position myself to see right properly. I usually rely on a passenger to tell me the coast is clear but would prefer to see for myself and also this does not help if I am driving on my own which I try to avoid for safety reasons.
I have seen a lot of fancy all round and blind spot camera systems so I have just devised my own cheap version. I already have two screens and two rear cameras - one up high looking down and one at number plate level looking straight back for when the bikes block my view of that area and as a handy low rear view mirror.
I have wired a simple £8 reversing camera from eBay to one of my existing screens using a 12v multi splitter for power and screwed it to the underside of my passenger side wing mirror. I have just set it up tonight and it seems to do the job but have not tried it on the road yet. I used a 12v extension wire to cover the distance and have ordered an RCA splitter so I can flick the video input back to the other rear camera at the touch of a button (lost my remote to switch AV inputs).
All in I would say the cost is well less than £20 and if it works as I hope it should give me good peace of mind and increase safety. I will keep the camera off and just flick it on if I come to a junction where I need it.
