Hi All, My wife and I have been toying with the idea of buying a motorhome for some time and we would like as much information as possible before we buy.
We would like to travel Ireland and Europe but we would like to spend months rather than weeks in Europe. Is this possible without breaking the banks??? Do we have to stay on registered sites or can we stop where we like? How much do sites cost? If we dont stay on sites do we need a genorator to charge things up? Where do we empty the chemical toilet? where do we refill the water tanks? What other tips can anyone offer!
We are looking at a 6 berth with a 'U' shaped lounge, are these good types of motorhome? We need some answers before we commit to buy. Is it better to have a Left hand drive? Any help on all these subjects and more would be appreciatted :-)
Many thanks Bikerman :bandit:

Hi Bikerman

You will find many different answers to your questions depending on who you ask.

Left or right hand drive makes no difference to most people. If you plan to spend most of the year on the continent left hand drive may be slightly easier for paying tolls etc. I have had many trips to France over the years and always had right hand drive but would not dismiss buying a left hand drive next time.

Campsite prices can differ greatly but in Ireland prices range from about €20 - €35 per night. Winter prices do drop but the number of sites open during this time also drops. In Ireland many Aire de service have started to appear. This is a continental thing where prices and facilities are very different from campsites. Prices are from free to about €10 per night. This is not camping in the same sense as on a campsite.

You also have the option to join a club and attend organised rallys where you will meet up with other motorhome owners and learn a lot by asking questions.

People talk about wild camping where you just pull up and stay for the night. Many of prefer to call this overnight parking as councils etc imagine all sorts of undesirable activities when they hear the phrase.

As for motorhomes, there are many makes and models in a massive price range. It sounds like you have your layout picked already but be aware there is a difference in build quality and "you get what you pay for" is usually true.

The most importance thing is to use the van and enjoy yourself.

I am going tomorrow to clean a van which is going up for sale. I know it is a 6 birth with a U shaped rear lounge. I can het you photos and details if you like.

Hi Mark, thanks for replying and setting me straight on a few things. I know your right and we should get more involved with the motorhome community and ask questions, hopefully in the near future. As for the motorhome you talked about, as we are only doing our homework we are not ready yet to buy but I am looking all the time (driving my wife potty) and we hope to join the motorhome clan and enjoy for many years.
Thanks again and happy camping. Brian

No worries Brian. It was a nice van (even nicer now I have cleaned it. LOL)

Just ask the questions. There are plenty of people on this forum who should be able to assist with your questions.
