Is this commonly known??? A fella mentioned it to me when I was asking how many belts were in a van... A swift bit of homework turned this up! All safety considerations aside, I was shocked to find out that from a legal stand point there is no requirement based on the age of a van! https://www.google.com/url?sa=…nqH1d8F0dl

I'm not shocked that there is a cutoff date before which they wouldn't have been compulsory but I'd have expected it to have been 20 years earlier.

Does the date correspond with the introduction of compulsory seatbelts in busses or was it just a huge oversight in the regulations?

I only knew about this because a colleague of mine has an old Mini and the car doesn't have seat belts in the back at all, that's the way it left the factory at the time so they technically can't force you to have one now.

Having said that, if you're going to take people on the back, I'd look into installing some for your own piece of mind.

I was told by a UK dealer last week that adults can travel on a side facing seat without a belt even on a brand new 2019 van. Under 16? or 18? must be in a belted seat.

Not sure if he was correct but I certainly wouldn’t do it.

It may be fine and well to carry more passengers than seat belts according to Killiand document about road traffic regulations.
It would be opinion of an insurance company that would worry me.
