It has happened to us.
Keep all of the plastic bits.
I used a plastic glue and glued the pieces back together. After it had set, I put 2 layers of fibreglass on the inside to put strength back into the bumper.

Painful! I saw a guy rip the side of a rented motorhome last year. I hit the front reversing on to a tight pitch so I bought small mirrors that stick the bottom of the side mirrors , but not convinced they are much use . Has anyone any suggestions to help manouevering, for example reversing sensors , patient wife etc.

I clipped mine the first day I tried out my dual reversing camera as I ignored my wing mirrors. Now I would always rely on the wing mirrors first and foremost and only use the cameras to keep an eye out for people or low objects directly behind. Cameras give the distance right behind you but you can easily forget about your width.

Reversing sensors would be very easy to fit on your van as there is plenty of room behind the rear bumper for the wiring etc and all you have to do is site the little display unit in the rear of your van so you can see it clearly in your rear view mirror. You may have to invert it to show correct left and right. My last Merc was like as a factory fitment.

The sensors would not pick an obstacle that the rear end has already passed. I was reversing round a pillar at home over a cattle grid all chuffed with my new cameras and just clipped the side about 4 foot from the rear bumper. I take that turn reversing turn regularly now and never have an issue I I use the mirrors first and foremost. I know another person who clipped the corner spouting of their house with their overcab and no camera or sensor would spot that.
I have rear sensors I can install but have not done it in case I am tempted to rely on them instead of my mirrors and camera. Someone backed into a thin bollard at my place recently as the sensors did not pick it up as it was so thin. I’ like my technology but I’ll be using my Mark 1 eyeball first where I can.

Gavster ... that’s exactly what I did wrong. Wife was looking at the wing mirror, saw it, and said stop, just when I heard the crunch

I have a dent in the back of my van which reversing sensors, reversing camera and wing mirrors didn't prevent. I was backing into a parking space in a disabled area in a large retail park next to the walkway. Next thing Maureen said did you hit something, in panic got out well almost 2 feet (60CM) from back line of space, looked all round nothing then looked up and the walkway was constructed of RSJs and at the top they in their wisdom had lengths they stuck out 3 feet each side from the up rights just about 6inches (15cm) lower than the height of my van, lovely dent in the top of my rear doors. Guess what, it is in a space where you cant get to it from behind on the curved part of the door. Have covered with a large decal for now as although not deep it has creased.
Aint life a bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of curiosity, have you got a LHD or a RHD mh?

I have a LHD but don’t think that makes a difference when reversing? Just at roundabouts or junction where you are forced to sit at an angle and can’t see clearly to the right.

I've done it myself just this weekend. Luckily I was going slow enough where I didn't cause any damage, but it's a horrible feeling bumping forward.
Wife has offered to jump off and spot ever since

Mrs Chausson is very good at going back and giving directions, pity she wouldn’t stand in line with the mirrors so I could see her directions
I have a woman who does stand in the view of the mirrors, then put her hand in front of her face for directing.
Maybe, I should buy her a glove.
