Future battery technology

While the above article is about electric vehicle or more to the point Telsa, this future technology will filter down to our humble leisure batteries.
I thought that it was interesting that Tesla put resources into teaching its customers about managing the battery charging cycles.
This leads me to ask the following, "What is the best practice for managing leisure batteries, to extend their lifespan and capacity?'

Well I always top mine up every 2 or 3 weeks when not away to keep them in good shape. But equally important I make sure to never discharge the batteries below 50% of their capacity, i.e 12.1 volts approx. Try and not let them get too cold also.
