Opel Vivaro LWB Conversion

Hi All,

First of all apologies if these questions has already been asked and answered on here - I did have a look and I couldn't see anything.

I am a newbie to all of this and have recently bought an Opel Vivaro LWB that I am hoping to convert and turn in to a camper.

I have 2 main questions (and thousands of other small ones!)

1. Is there a height restriction for converting to a camper? The Vivaro has an internal height of less than 1.8m which I have seen some people say is too low to be converted but then I see T5's, etc. for sale which say they are a camper on the log book. I have searched a lot and cannot find anything definitive on this so any help appreciated.

2. On the revenue website it says all conversion work must be carried out by an SQI but I am unclear if this means that the actual work needs to be done by them or I just need an assessor to sign off on the work? Again I have looked for clarification on this but cannot find any. Whenever I search for an SQI I get a list of assesors??

Thanks in advance for any help and apologies if the answer is already in the Forum somewhere.

SQI has to sign off on the work done, I think the height rule was done away with. What part of the country are you in ?

The height is now stated as,a person of average height.
5ft 9in
The average Irish man born in 1980 is now 1.76cm tall (5ft 9in).
Irish women today stand at an average height of 5ft 5 inches (165cm),
SQI are assessor and motor engines. most of the VNT/ DOE centers attached to garaged will have a SQI.
( the Boss Or Owner)
Call one of the near you and ask.
They will examine the vehicle for fixture and fitting. An RGI. or one of the motorhome service guys can do the gas work certification.
The insurance will want two straps on the bottles and may want a photo.

No need for Gas Certification in the South.

On the first examination they say you do ,this paragraph is Cut and pasted from Revenue Conversion.

It is expected that the living accommodation space in the rear compartment would have side windows. Where cooking is by means of gas, a Gas Installer Certificate should also be available.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies.

Can I just confirm then that you are saying I cannot convert my Vivaro to a campervan as the internal height is under 5'9"? Can you tell me how vans like these can be a camper on the logbook as its height is less than the Vivaro? - https://www.donedeal.ie/camper…n/20691643

And also, again just to make sure I understand, I can get any garage to to do work, say install a rock n roll bed, as long as I get an assesor to sign off on it?

Sorry for my confusion.

Just had a van converted. Gas water heater and gas cooker fitted. Revenue accepted conversion without a gas cert.
No requirement for RGI to carry out the Gas installation or need for Cert.

What is the internal height of your Ducato?

It was not a Ducato.

Extra high roof Movano, so there was no issue with height.

I don’t think it matters what hight you have in the van but if your really worried you could get a pop up roof fitted,a friend
of mine has a small vw van which you can’t stand up in he’s had no problems with it

Donedeal can call them what they like but they are only dayvans.

No I'm not saying you can't convert you're van the text is from the revenue site and all they say us ( of average Height )
The two figures are from information on the height of men and women in Ireland .
I would have said that an average is half way between 5-9 and 5-5 = 5-7
What do you think.

Yeah it looks like the internal height will be too low. I don't have the budget for a pop up roof. I will try and call to the local assessor and see what they say.

I'll let everyone know if I get any clarification.

Thanks everyone

Hello. Just joined the forum looking for info about the same topic. I was in touch with Dolmen about the height issue. They say its is a requirement to have the 1.8m height but they deal with low roof versions on a case by case basis. They send off to their underwriters (axa) and they will have the final say. They require photos of the conversion so they can judge if its really a campervan or just a "day van". As far as the gas goes, the insurer doesnt need an RGI cert but from what i gather the revenue do, although i know of a few people who have gotten away with out the need for one.
