Hello! Another newbie with a mercedes t1 1986 question

Hi everyone

My partner and I are excitedly about to buy our first campervan and are hoping to go and have a look at a 1986 mercedes some point in the next few days. Does anyone have any tips or advice about older mercs or campers in general? We are very much going in blind as neither of us know much about mechanics.

Really looking forward to future adventures!

Take someone along that knows the ins and outs, watch for corrosion and rust. If treated well those old Mercs are bombproof but still needs looking at by someone who knows about mechanics and body condition before you even think about making an offer.
If its a motorhome body (a body built on a chassis) then look for damp, if it’s a van conversion then the same applies to a lesser extent.
Try and test everything is working and it’s currently got a MOT/CVRT test.
Don’t get drawn in too quickly and buy with your head and not your heart.
Good luck and keep us updated whatever you do and welcome to Motorhomecraic..... hopefully meet you on the road soon.

If it’s a van look at the conversion it it’s some who thinks that they can put a few units togeather or has it been professionally done ,and I always tell people your nose is your best weapon get into every corner if you smell damp or think you. smell damp it is damp, lift up any seats and look inside every cupboard go underneath and check the floor if you know someone who knows about mechanics take them with you to check the engine, good luck hope it’s what your looking for 👍

Thank you both for the advice, we went to see it yesterday but it was a dud... the engine seemed good, the chassis was perfect but there was damp inside. We knew going up it was a bit of a gamble but as it was in our home county and it had the ideal layout we were looking for we thought we'd give it a chance. However we are very hopeful about a talbot express merlin we are lined up to see on wednesday...ticks all the boxes...brand new cvrt, receipts, low mileage etc...so fingers crossed all goes well we will be on the road by next weekend!
