Motorhome speed limits UK.

This has been cropping up lately so I thought I would post again.

UK Motorhome Speed Limits are not your GVW - they are based on your unladen weight.

Good info there, also anyone going to France might want to check the new speed limits there as alot of tickets seem to be given out at the moment

How do you establish the ULW of a Motorhome?

Where is it published?

Has anyone ever been prosecuted for speeding based on the ULW?

Published in your handbook, deduct your payload from 3500.

I doubt anyone has ever been prosecuted, but don't know, its a totally daft way of doing it if you ask me. I always go by, my van is 3500 Gross so I can do the same speed as a car, but that is wrong.

I take the opposite view in that its 3500 so drive it like a van at the reduced speeds, afterall who wants to do 70 in a wobble box and then try to stop quickly!!!

Oh I don't drive at those speeds usually, but that's what I go by when I do. I do like it sitting at 70 mph on a Motorway for long runs every few times to keep it all running nicely. It is after all a courier/builder/plumbers white van and built for high mileage, fast mileage abuse. 🤭

The handbook is not a legal document so I wouldn't expect any figures in it could be used for law enforcement.
I'm no expert in UK road traffic laws but in the back of my mind there's something about a speed regulation in ancient times relating to 'heavy cars' and other vehicles exceeding 3 tons (imperial tons) having restricted speed limits.
Goods vehicles and buses (passenger vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats) do have their unladen weight marked on them, but I've never seen passenger vehicles with not more than 8 passenger seats (cars & motorhomes) with the unladen weight recorded.
Without the UL being officially recorded I can't see how a prosecution could be initiated.
