Try pushing the headrest forward as you pull it  up.

On my seats there is a little black rings where the headrest bars enter the seat and on the the outer a little push to release the headrest. If that is not there mines a 2003, Somewhere in the distant past I remember feeling the back of the seat up around the top to find a release button.Sorry I can not help more

Tried this unsuccessful. The headrest rises abour3/4" and stops as if locked. Under the upholstery is like a horseshoe shaped collar (steel). I have tried prising this open thinking it may spring open but no. (afraid of too much) and may snap.
My reason for removal is to fit seat covers.
Any more solutions offered please??

I remember having something like this in a car once, I think you press the headrest down a little and then press both legs of the horseshoe bit in and then lift the headrest up and the horseshoe bits should come up and remain on the stem of the headrest coming out with it.
Sorry if I'm wrong but worth trying.
