How far ahead from expiry date can you renew?

CVRT Renewal

My CVRT expires end of May. I called a local test center to book a renewal test and wanted to book for the beginning of May. I was told over the phone that booking that early ahead means I will miss out on some of my current valid CVRT period, and that the earliest I should book is two weeks ahead. This didn’t seem right to me but I let him make the booking for mid-May. The actual booking is the day before heading to France. I would have preferred an earlier test date just to give more time to amends on any matters that might arise should the test fail.

I then checked the CVRT website and came across this:

Can I test my vehicle early?
Yes. You can have your vehicle tested up to 1 month early without changing the test anniversary date.

You can also have your vehicle tested more than 1 month early. This will change your test due date to a date 12 months after your vehicle passed the test. We've introduced this facility to give businesses the opportunity to change their test due date to a time of the year that better suits their business needs.

Is that not pretty black and white? It looks straight forward that you can book up to a month in advance without missing out on any validity period. How could the test centre not know this?

It probably suited the test centre to test you when they booked you in (staff shortage/training/holidays etc)
Id check with a different centre that can suite you,
I wouldnt leave it til the day before France to test it,

Some test centres are notorious for moving bookings around to suit themselves especially with staff on holidays etc.
With the online computer systems being used now, a tester cannot go quicker than the system allows for each section of the test lane.
My advice would be to go elsewhere with your business on your preferred date.

Yeah, I think I agree with the above statements. You see if it suited him to book the test later, why didn’t he just say that? Why fib? It is so easy to be found out. Why the BS? Now I really don’t trust the centre which is also the same place I wanted the service done.

That's very tight to a French trip alright I'd book elsewhere too
I heard a good one yesterday a guy brought in his Jeep and it passed and he had to book a test for the next day as the test he passed should have been done a year ago he'd forgotten 😅😅

I always book just within a month early. Gives you a bit of time if something major is wrong. Never had a problem or lost any time on next years due date. Find another tester

The CVRT would now have my booking entered on their system. Would I incur a cancellation fee if I were to book elsewhere?

I wouldn’t think so. Have never heard of that, but I don’t know for certain

That 30 day period is just a cut and paste from Commercial Vehicle testing regulations written with high use vehicles in mind which can clock up 200,000kms or more in a year.
We have had a lot of argument with The RSA during which they failed to present any safety-related reason as to why the 90 day period applicable to cars could not be extended to motorhomes.
