New parking arrangements for Newcastle

The council will in the next week mark out four Motorhome parking bays in Castle Park in the centre of Newcastle. This coincides with the removal of parking from two other car parks by the installation of height barriers. I will make points separately here rather than have a narrative read.

1. There will be 4 marked bays at this location 54° 12' 36.9756'' N
5° 53' 30.336'' W Castle car park, best accessed from the south end of the town by Causeway road and then Park Avenue.

2. The bays are not exclusively for Motorhomes as this is almost impossible to police and the parking has been pitched to the council as shared parking. So there may be a car in a bay during the day. Similar to many village aires on the continent.

3. Arrive after 5pm and you will be more likely to get a space. You then have possession for your stay.

4.the council have not yet altered the bylaw so the limit is technically 12 hours but unlikely to be enforced in the future until the success of the location is measured.

5. Self regulation of a maximum of 48 hours is imperative to build our credibility.

6. The scheme will fail if more than 4 vans try to stay on a frequent occurrence. Think of Donaghadee.

7. If the bays are occupied by Motorhomes then please proceed to the rock pool car park at the south end of the town. 54° 12' 11.7216'' N
5° 53' 29.1804'' W This location is approx 100 metres further out the Kilkeel road than the Glen river car park which we are about to lose use of.

8. If we can be seen to use the carparks in a responsible way then marked bays will be provided there.

9.we are continuing to look at other locations in excellent places in the town, but think of why the height barriers are being installed. We will have a limited opportunity to prove what we can do for the towns economy.

10. May I suggest that when you spend money in the town you point out that you are visiting (and spending) because the council have provided parking.

11. This represents a first move on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down district council. In the next few weeks Gavster and I hope to meet with an SDLP MLA, a councillor on the planning committee, the assistant head of tourism, and the duty manager of carparking. The subject of that meeting is to lobby for proper serviced aires in the council area. Newry, Warrenpoint, and anywhere else that might be thought a likely spot. Send us you ideas of locations.

12. It can be seen that a lot hangs on our ability to use the provision sensibly and I will have no hesitation in asking the council to enforce a sensible usage to ensure it’s success and a basis to secure more provision.

13. All of this has been done with the approval of motorhomecraic and was only entered into after the council had decided to install height barriers, so as far as I am concerned we have been fighting an uphill battle, we have a toe in the door and will keep pushing.

Thanks Davy,

I have given a copy of “All the Aires” to a local councillor to show others in he council as it seems some are not sure what they are and assumed they always have to have EHU. The book explains what aires are and the various forms they can take and can be as simple as a few marked out parking spaces as in this case. Glad that the council are still recognising the importance of Motorhomes to a towns economy so we need to encourage that.

In my experience also lack of knowledge of what we require is part of the problem when it comes to council. I personally found that what was in our local councils mind was camp site type facilities and when I explained how basic Motorhome needs are they changed their outlook. Well done Gavster/Davy keep up the good work.

Davy

The bays have now been marked out. They are in the front area of the Castle Park car park facing onto the river and pond where the swan pedalos operate. The general location is virtually in the centre of the town and only 100m from the main street.

They have each been created by removing the dividing lines in two existing car park spaces so the bays are the width of two previous car park spaces. Including the area of the "Motorhome" text the bays are about 5.5m to 6.0m long so a short MH could drive in. A longer MH would need to reverse in and allow the rear to overhand the footpath. The footpath in this area is very wide so should not be an issue.

Good to see they are in almost full use already! Shared spaces between motorhomes and cars of course.

It is anticipated that Motorhomes (particularly longer vans) will reverse into the bays. The overhang onto the paved area is insignificant as the width of walkway is probably in excess of 10 metres at that point. This is why that part of the park was chosen in collaboration with the council. It also is well placed to allow the easiest access, egress and room to manoeuvre. I hope the council will erect a sign explaining the proper use of an Aire by Motorhomes.

It is also worth pointing out that the council created extra parking bays for cars equal to the number of bays lost by enlarging the Motorhome bays, so there is no lose of parking in the town.

I was past this morning and it was good to see that only one bay was being used (by a large people carrier) and the other bays were vacant, although I would not expect this at busier times.

The council need to be applauded for realising that provision is needed and trying to accommodate us despite the gurning of critics.

I personally think this needs to be supported, while some may not like the fact that they cannot get almost into the sea this is a provision for us right in the centre of the town, after all the council could have just ignored us completely or placed it way out of the way.

Well done Davy for all the hard work on this.

To add to FC comments about supported this new venture, it's equally important to realise that if these spaces are full, move on to somewhere else.

Two ways in

Main Street A2 (one way street heading south)
Turn right into Post Office Lane (opposite the water park on the Main Street)
Turn right into Park Avenue
Proceed to car park

Shimna Road A2 (one way street heading north)
Turn right into Causeway Road
Turn left into Park Avenue
Proceed to car park.

I think it is better for vans (particularly longer ones) to approach as I stated in post no. 1 by Causeway Road and then Park Avenue as the approach from the Main Street will require 2 quite tight turns.

It is for those of us who have a long memory, the park that had the slippery dip slide in it.

A wallop on the scone

A belt across the bake

A boot in the onion box

A slap on the neb

A kick in the hole

Comprende?

Yes there was. A few noisy lads and maybe a few slaps on the side of Motorhomes at about 1.30 am. On Friday night a few kids gave ours a slap and run away around 10pm.

The police would be out quick if you gave you them a slap and ran away... Maybe the kids have realised the link between a Motorhome stop appearing and anti social behaviour in the area usually dropping. I’m thinking of the drop in thefts from boats that someone mentioned at Annagassen since the Motorhomes started staying there.

Agree.
The police will only investigated a complaint made.
A few extra patrol stops cost them nothing.
If you are there and see a patrol, offer them a cuppa.
Long term it would do us no harm.

No response to two questions of "did you ring the PSNI?"

No point telling Facebook, phone the police, that's their job. If you don't it will continue.

"As for contacting the PSNI,they would not have the brains"
Thats a very broad statement about facebook users. A lot of people, including myself use facebook to keep in touch with family, friends etc who live abroad. And if we indulge in corresponding and communicating with others as well, whats the big deal?
A lot of motorhome groups are contactable on facebook and a broader audience is reachable to inform us of anti social behaviour like this instance. You dont have to like it or take part in it, but dont assume all facebook users are idiots.

I was not attempting to tar everyone with the same brush,it was aimed at the people,IE who have to report in the middle of the night that they are not having a very good night, the ones who cannot go into a resturant without showing the world what they are about to eat, go to the toilet without reporting how things went.
Of course there are very sensible people who use it,but they are probably in the minority.
Only my observations.

I was not attempting to tar everyone with the same brush,it was aimed at the people,IE who have to report in the middle of the night that they are not having a very good night, the ones who cannot go into a restaurant without showing the world what they are about to eat, go to the toilet without reporting how things went.
Of course there are very sensible people who use it,but they are probably in the minority.
Only my observations.

I know exactly what you mean, the number of people who would rather take a picture and post it on fecesbook of a life or death incident than (a) get the feck out of there (b) report it to the relevant authorities is beyond belief

But on the reported anti social behaviour all its doing is stopping people using the provided services and going elsewhere to spend their hard earned.
