Shane Ross TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport may make an announcement soon which will probably suggest the changeover of the driving side on Irelands roads. Apparently driving on the right, as is already done in all other EU countries, would help strengthen Irelands’ bond within the EU following Brexit and the withdrawal of the UK.
Obviously, a complete changeover in one day would be out of the question as road signs, roundabouts, traffic lights etc to name but a few would have to be altered so following a meeting with other ministers it has been suggested that the operation should be approached in weekly stages to minimise disruption. It has been further suggested, that due to their experience of regular continental driving, owners of Motorhomes and Camper Vans under 3500t should begin the changeover on Monday the 1st. of April at 2.00am. This could be followed a week later by Buses and HGV’s and the following week by Cars and Vans and finally Motorcycles and Bicycles on the last Monday of the month, it would be crucial that these dates would be strictly adhered to, avoiding confusion to other road users and tourists. Further meetings will be held over the coming weeks to confirm approval by all interested parties before proceeding.
No more worries about continental driving if this goes ahead.
Please Note;
All road users are advised to await the official confirmation before attempting any change in their driving habits.
