Rumour has it, the annual Irish Hot Air Baloon Championships might return to Birr again in September this year.

I wouldn't know the layout of Birr to recommend an overnight stop.
There was one near the airfield on the Roscrea road but that closed up a few years ago.

Just looking there and the Waterways Ireland Aire at Portumna Castle harbour isn't too far away and would make a great weekend out of a trip that direction.
