Additional Cooking Appliances

So starting to gear up for our first big trip abroad in the summer. Will obviously use the van a good few other times over the summer. We are a family of 2 adults and three kids under 10.

In addition to the internal gas hob, what other cooking appliances do you use?

A friend of mine swears by his halogen cooker. Says it's brilliant for roasting chicken, cooking burgers, chicken nuggets, fish fingers etc. So I'm considering one of these or a Philips air fryer.

Also I'm thinking of getting a BBQ which I can use with the vans gas canisters. As I don't have any external connection I'll have to take out a canister to fit the BBQ. Which BBQ's are recommended to use with the vans canister? Safari Chef 2 (LP or HP? I think LP), Weber Q1000 or Q1200. Whichever I get, I'd like some sort of stand so it's at least waist height.

For the gas pipe coming into the hob, should I put a Y piece in that and fit an external gas connection?

For outside cooking we have ONE OF THESE, it's now probably 25 years old and still in PWO.
As for the gas supply, you can't beat an external point but by law it must be fitted by a qualified gas technician. There is no greater pain in the ass than humping one of your gas bottles in and out of its locker every time you want to cook outside.

As regards additional electric cooking appliances, many European campsite supplies are restricted to 6 amps and some are even as low as 4 amps. With anything more than 1200 watts you could be in trouble.

Do you need some sort of certificate to prove it's done correctly?

Would it not be possible to make up a hose eith the connection for the cylinder on one end and the regulator on the other and have it 2-3 mts long. That way no need to lift out the cylinder

We have an electric pressure cooker/ slow cooker at home and used every day, and we take it in Mh if we know we will have EHU.
It is quiet, no steam and when finished cooking it keeps warm. Good sized pot for family. It is 1000 watt so ok on EHU just don’t have too many electrics running at same time. Bought in Aldi or Lidl.
We also have a halogen cooker used less often handy for quick meal, frozen chips etc, not had much success with baking.
Also when ready to serve, where to put hot lid while cooling when worktop space is limited.

We have an inbuilt oven/grill, but used only once or twice.
Has anyone ever taken out Mh oven and replaced with a microwave?

We use our oven pretty much daily when in MH. Find it very useful. Just lash whatever in. Have a drink while you are waiting, or two. Take it out and bobs your uncle

To be honest we use a Cadac Carri chef for nearly everything that we cook on Holiday, its not the most compact of BBQ/Grills but it is very versatile, with hot plate/grill and pot stand all in one unit, I use small 5kg propane tank and that lasts for easily 4 weeks of meals.
Its easy to lift out of the van and replace as well, if we run short the 13kg will work as well.
I prefer to cook outside anyway rather than inside especially when frying.

Well I have nothing to prove it, but I can see no reason why 2 meters of hose would be any more restrictive than 2 or even 4 meters of piping from your regulator to your hob

If Calor are selling the following I don't think you will have a problem with pressure or flow.
Calor 4.8mm high pressure gas hose 3 metres in length and complete with two jubilee clips. Suitable for use with blow torches and space heaters.
Calor 8mm gas hose 5 metres in length and complete with two jubilee clips. Suitable for use with camping stoves, gas bbqs, patio heaters and gas cookers.
Calor 10mm gas hose 5 metres in length and complete with two jubilee clips. Suitable for use with camping stoves, gas bbqs, patio heaters and gas cookers.

To echo some earlier comments, you don't want to be cooking inside the wagon in warm weather. Even in cold weather, I like to cook outside, not have cooking fumes permeating everything indoors.
Our gas locker takes 2 11(ish)kg propane bottles. I keep the furthest in bottle connected to the regulator feeding the van and the one closest the door gets pulled out for Al fresco cooking, most recently just before nightfall tonight. Once you don't need to undo a regulator, it's very quick, open door, loosen strap, bottle out.
The Cadac grills come highly recommended but I picked up one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Domet…B00LSGBXUG about 18 months ago for GBP£30 (don't know if it was a promotion or a misprice but it was delivered) off Amazon and it's been the business. I'm also partial to cooking on a charcoal BBQ, so this grill is complementary rather than duplication of effort.

I have Cadac Chef for about 10 years. It never fails to fire-up first time. It can be awkward tiresome getting it in and out of the u embed garage, so I leave it covered outside for duration of stay. Gas tank left out as well
Very very reliable.

You can do that but the regular MUST be at the cylinder end otherwise the hose will be subject to the full pressure from the cylinder, for which it's not designed or intended to handle

I have a length of hose which is about 4m long, I got it in Spain where the 1m regulation doesn't seem to apply 😊

You can buy 5 metre hose direct from Calor. I know, I have done it. I screw the regulator direct to the cylinder then the hose to the bbq. Happy cooking

Both myself and my wife don't have the patience for a BBQ.
We use the fitted gas oven in our mh as our main cooking appliance.
At home extra large, stews, curries, etc are frozen and reheated in the mh oven when away on short trips.
For hot weather, we use one of these as the stove, to keep the mh cooler.

Can be got for less than €20 and replacement gas cartilage for about €3.
Our gas locker only holds one cylinder of gas, so the butane stove ties us over until replacement cylinder is got.
We are considering getting a small pressure cooker as they are very efficient way of cooking.

I find that strange Malcolm, as I find the gas bbq one of the fastest ways to cook. Once it’s set up, it’s hot in a few minutes and you can bang out a meal very quickly,,, or as slow as you want. Once it’s hot you can cook a steak in about 5 minutes

I don't find a BBQ a very efficient way of cooking, certainly in Ireland.
Too often it's either raining or just too windy for the BBQ to build up proper heat.
Too often I have seen guys moving wind breakers around to provide shelter.
But then, my comments should be viewed as someone who spents less than 20% of their time away in commercial sites.

I set mine up under the awning and with one side of the awning covered it makes a very nice cool space, if grilling with the bbq grill I move it out further but the hot plate doesn’t smoke like the grill does so I mainly use that.
Also I’m an early riser even on holiday and can go out and boil water for coffee or tea without disturbing the rest of the crew.

We're the same- 2 adults and 3 kids under 11.

Halogen oven and a wonder bag (works as a slow cooker when driving or leave there when out and about all day as it's doesn't require power).

Tried our new SQ Professional frying pan when we were away over midterm and it cooks pizzas to perfection on the hob in just a few minutes. Think we'll be ditching the halogen oven as this is all we used it for and could only use it when we had EHU. Great piece of kit!
