Having a commercial licence in my pocket I am aware of the lower speed limits for weight.
This is the first article that I have seen to address the heavier mh question.

A different question, when driving over 3500 kg, which alcohol limits are used?

Perhaps they are waiting for Stormont to reassemble to borrow some paper to write on, But seriously it is the same on the continent, you have a lower speed limit on main roads and motorways and you can be charged more on motorways and not allowed into towns etc unless you are collecting or delivering when you are over 3500 Kg

Thanks for the reminder. My MH is 4500kg but I tend to drive it like a car. With all the speed cameras about there is more of a chance of picking up a ticket. It didn’t help when France reduced the limit to 80 km on normal roads. I have only been stopped once for speeding in the van, about 25 yeas ago in Hungary but talked my way out of it

Can't see them changing the limit for any vehicle over 3500kg. Particularly a motorhome, there would be no logical reason to do so. Another ruling that will soon be in forced is the 80k max for anyone towing be it a small car, trailer, horsebox or caravan.

If one knew the relevant legislation one would not publish such a factually incorrect article.

I'll say no more except that in my opinion motorhomes should be subject to the same speed limits as applied to other passenger vehicles, not to those which apply to goods vehicles

Suffice to say I'm happy to drive my 3.85t mh as I would do my car 😉
But only in the RoI.

Mine is 4.0 and I drop the speed down to 80 kph if I see a speed van which usually frightens the sh1t out of anyone following me as there is no obvious reason to them why I'd want to be going at 80 in a 100 zone 😡

In the UK the limits are based on maximum unladen weight, not the max weight of the vehicle.

Type of vehicle/Built-up areas mph (km/h)/Single carriageways mph (km/h)/Dual carriageways mph (km/h)/Motorways mph (km/h)
Motorhomes or motor caravans (not more than 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight) 30 (48) 60 (96) 70 (112) 70 (112)
Motorhomes or motor caravans (more than 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight) 30 (48) 50 (80) 60 (96) 70 (112)

My 3500kg van is 3067kg unladen so its at the lower speed, so think about it when travelling in the north or UK

In the North speed limits are based on the type of vehicle, not the weight.

Car derived vans are same as a car.

All obvious vans are commercial, therefore 10mph less on a national road, dual carriageway or motorway.

Transit Van, no matter the weight is 10mph less than a car. (Because it's a commercial vehicle. Even applies to those small transit connect vans)

Transit minibus (potentially heavier than the van) has the same speed limit as a car, regardless of passenger numbers.

Transit Motorhome (like mine) same speed limit as a car.
I've a 140bhp lump and she happily cruises just over 70mph. But I will watch this thread with interest.

Stevie.

Passenger vehicles and goods vehicles can have different speed limits within the same weight category.
Example:
Busses with standing have a different speed limit to coaches which have a different limit to goods vehicles.
Here in The RoI coaches are allowed 100 km/h on motorways while HGV's are allowed 90 km/h. In France coaches are allowed 110 km/h on motorways and 100km/h on dualcarrageways, motorhomes over 3.5t, being passenger vehicles, are treated the same, but HGV's are restricted to 90km/h.
In most countries all vehicles over 3.5t are only allowed 80km/h on single carriageway roads.
The new reduce speed limits in France are not taken into account in the above.
