Hi
We are a NZ family of 5. My wife and I, our 4yr old lad and my parents heading over to Dublin then on to UK before back to Dublin.
We are looking for a six berth motorhome to hire from 04 April to 16 May 2019.

We are hoping to save some money by hiring privately and would love to hear from you.
no pets. no smoking. nice people.

Cheers,
Zanda.

Hi Zanda,
Welcome to MotorhomeCraic.
This has been discussed before, if you type “hire” into the search option (top right) you will get some threads regarding motorhome hire. Private rental here I think wont be realistic as insurance is nigh on impossible for this option.
But here are some previous replies......... keep us updated and ask any questions...... we’re here to help.

Our son is a NZ resident/ and their driving licence he no longer has an Irish driving licence, he wasn’t allowed drive our motorhome when home for a visit.
Dolmen said EU driving licence would have been ok. We were surprised considering NZ also drive on left side of road.
No problem adding him to our car insurance.

Motorhome Hire companies probably would allow after all many visitors to Ireland are from beyond Europe.

That surely makes private hire out of the question. Stick with rental companies I would say.

Are the plane tickets booked yet, are you 'locked' into arriving at Dublin.

A few years ago we met some Kiwi's and Aussies touring Europe in a pair of motorhomes which they hired in Germany, so apparently there are no licence issues there for tourists from down under though you might need an international driving permit.
Could you start and end your trip to Europe in Germany where there is a big motorhome hire market at acceptable prices.

Be aware that if the UK crash out of the EU without a deal and become a 'third' country entering and leaving the UK with a foreign registered vehicle could be problematic.

Just do a quick check with Irish rental companies first. There is no problem with non-EU visitors hiring a car here generally . I would imagine that applies to Motorhomes.

Does anyone know of a provisional/learner driver getting insurance cover for a motorhome here in Ireland?
I suspect that non EU driving licence holders are given the same risk status as our learner drivers.
The hire companies operate a fleet insurance which is then sold to individual customers.

Irish people hire campers in NZ and Oz all the time. Non EU citizens hire vehicles here all the time with the appropriate licence. I just did a quick check on Indie Campers website FAQ which states.

Which driving licence is required to drive a campervan?
To drive our campervans, a normal valid driving licence category B is required and the driver must be over 18 years old. For short and medium term rentals, there is no international license required.

Not sure for motorhomes, but when you have a non-EU license you are able to drive in Ireland for 1 year and insure a car without any issues (just have to pay for it).

Most likely official rental companies will have no issues with non-eu license for a motorhome since they'll be on a commercial type of insurance. Don't see it happening for the motorhome on a private basis though
