Reading an article about importing into the Republic after Brexit if no deal is in place. Motorhomes and cars would attract 23% vat plus 10% import duty instead of 13% import at the moment. Taking an example of a 16000 euro purchase x 23% =3680 =19680 then 10% giving total of 21648 euro. against a total of !8080 euro inc 13% at the moment, A purchase before the end of March would possibly save 3568 euro. These are only my thoughts and these rates need checking.

And going the other way, from ROI to GB, could incur a 22% tarriff under WTO rules.
My question, who collects these extra taxes?
Is it the receiving government?
Politicians won't care if this jacks up their budget figures.

The vrt will be probably levied at the newer figures that nilrac has quoted.

I was just thinking that myself today, who gets these tarrifs and if it's the government will we get tax reliefs to help us pay them

Don't forget the exchange rate whatever that will be post brexit. You can always go to the rest of the EU if LHD is your cup of tea and have a continental holiday on your way back. Ryanair out, Irish Ferries home.

It'll be 10% Common Customs Tariff plus 23% VAT all charged on the invoice price plus shipping and any shipping insurance.

This is all on top of the 13.5%VRT charged on the magical figure plucked from a place that the sun don't shine (a figure that already includes VRT).

Import tariffs paid to the EU single market, currently makes up about 15% of the EU income. After Brexit with a no deal situation and WTO tariffs been applied to UK sales into EU, tariffs is estimated to become about 20% of EU income.
However, there will be tariffs to be paid to the UK government on EU exports by the EU.

I bought new in The UK but specifically ordered LHD, a major advantage is a trade-in deal can be done anywhere on mainland Europe.
IMHO LHD has no downside, driving it here il RHD land is no problem.

If you buy new you will not have to pay the VAT in the country you are exporting from

If I buy secondhand from the uk is it the uk that get the vat? if so shouldn't the vat be 20%, that is the uk vat rate, isn't it?

If buying second-hand it's just the advertised price, or less subject to haggling, that you pay. The VAT is paid only on new, VAT is only paid once so, not on second-hand stuff.
VAT = Value Added Tax, the sale of secondhand stuff has no added value, as we all know once a vehicle is driven off the forecourt its value is declining.
NOTE: our Revenue considers vehicles less than 6 months old or with less than 6,000kms on the clock to be 'new' so will look for VAT but a refund, or partial refund, of VAT originally paid in the country of origin, can be reclaimed once export has been proven.

In a no deal BREXIT scenario, second hand imports from the UK to ROI will incur VAT

Surely that will apply to new vehicles going forward, all vehicles that were bought pre-brexit would have paid VAT already, so it should only be import duties as usual.

The duty and excise will be due after you cross back over the border.
Unless you do a "Brendan Grace" trick, bring the booze home in you, not on you.

You would have to pay it first then claim it back following the proper paper trail to the revenue authorities on both sides!

An interesting thread.
VAT is a standardised system across the EU and the EEA and the rules prevent 'double taxation', which is why the cross border trade in second-hand goods on which VAT was paid at the time of purchase when new is not subject to further VAT, the chain stops at the point of sale to the retail consumer. It's a tax on 'final consumption'.

However, if The UK & NI crash out of The EU without a deal and become 'third countries' trading under WTO rules :-/

It would be exactly the same as importing a USA vehicle where you pay VRT and VAT on registration.
IOW a 23% addition to the price!

Another important thing is that the Irish Revenue base their calculations on what a comparable vehicle is worth on an Irish Market not what you have a receipt for. Bet the ones with the gold braid and big salaries are rubbing their hands together and saying Bring on Brexit we can get a bigger house in Florida,

Forget about buying and selling for a moment, will we need to do temporary import and proof of export if taking a holiday in the motorhome/car in the UK/NI and vice versa. Like when going to Morocco

I can’t understand how it is legal to calculate the amount of Vrt or import duty on the value of an Irish vehicle where tax has already been paid, you are paying Tax on already paid Tax.

That's another one for when you win the EuroLotto. You will need lots of spare funds to take on and prove the Government is robbing you.

Vrt is approximately 13.5% of the revenue valuation not your receipt.
