Advice Van tax

Hi, looking at buying a Van for conversion. It will be in my driveway a lot of the time but when I want to get a professional job done I need to drive it to garages etc.
My question is will I have to fork out €1200 euro in van tax as the Van wouldn’t have been officially declared a Campervan? Or is there another option that I can take.
Regards Gerard

Tax is a given and won’t be 1200 commercial tax is €333 pa. I think a bigger problem will be insuring it while you are converting. Seemingly lots of converters are finding it difficult to get insured at all.

Thanks I was looking at group f for the van and not commercial so that is a big help,
insurance was my follow up question in that what do people do for insurance when converting their vans. Difficult but not impossible?
Which insurers do people who do convert use?
Regards Gerard

Private insurance on commercial vehicles is becoming very problematic without a vat number and employees. I can’t advise on any particular insurer as I have found that circumstances vary so much that it’s impossible to know who will cover and who won’t. Have you got insurance currently with anyone?

Hiring a recovery truck is probably you cheapest option regarding the road traffic laws.
€50 callout and then €100 per hour or €1 per km plus vat ( country rates).
In relation to insurance while been converted, that would be the responsibility of the converter because you have place your van into their care, so it is their responsibilities .

That’s probably the cheapest option or if you have a friend with a van, he might transfer his insurance and drive it to the converters for you if the tax is still valid

If you are bringing it to a garage do they not have a garage plate, get them to collect and deliver back .

Ok Thanks, it is a difficult one but I have spent the past year weighing the pros and cons of going the conversion route as opposed to buying a motor home.
IMO the conversion route is where I will get the best ‘bang for your buck’. Unless of course a camper van with my criteria would turn up for sale in the meantime. Hoping to buy the van around the end of January and have it converted for August.
Regards Gerard

Have you looked at Race Vans ? most are fitted out as day vans and would have less to do and can have a years Tax and CVRT. The insurance company's will look at it in a different way it its already converted to Day Van.

Thanks never thought about converting a day van. I will keep my eye out for one that hopefully meets what I’m looking for.
At the moment I’m looking at Ducato/Relay/Boxer type Vans as you can fit a transverse bed in these after the insulation is put in.

You would need a valid CVRT cert too, there are companies who will do the conversion for you, you supply the van and tell them what you want, job would be done quicker than you could do it yourself, but you wouldn't have the satisfaction of doing it yourself but all the paperwork would be done too for insurance etc
