Campsites near(ish) Cork

We're planning on going to/from Santander with Brittany Ferries in April/November 2019. We will need to find somewhere to stay that is max 1 hour from the ferry terminal in Cork, to fit in with departure & arrival times. It'll be our first trip on this route and have no idea about suitable stopovers.

Any suggestions?

Also, what's the ferry like? Their www constantly reminds you that it's an "economie" service. How cheap and cheerful is it??

stay at the aire at cobh. tenner a night and well looked after. nice stroll along the boardwalk into town where there are great pubs and restaurants.

it is yeah. Opposite Haulbowline navy base. easy enough to find.

I'm sure the ferry co would let you overnight in the carpark as you're sailing the next morning.

The ferry terminal is on the west side of Cork harbour while Cobh Aire is on the eastern side, at least 40 minutes of driving in light traffic.
Use the river ferry for €7, cuts the trip to less than 20 minutes.

+1 for using Cobh aire. Good choice with pubs and restaurants within walking distance as mentioned above

However the Passage West car ferry is unsuitable for motorhomes unless you have a very short overhang, e.g. 6m +/-
I wouldn't be depending on high tides to avoid the risk of bottoming out. On the few times we have used it on bikes, I have even seen the front of cars with sports/low suspensions clipping the ramps coming off the ferry. Ouch !

There are a few reviews of the Brittany Ferries economie ship to Spain on line. Its not in the same league as the BF Pont Aven. More in line with the Stena Horizon from Rosslare to Cherbourg or the Irish Ferries Epsilon from Dublin to Cherbourg which are marketed as budget transport. You won't have a choice of restaurants, bars, cinema etc.
That said, we have used the Stena ship many times and it is more than satisfactory for adults. Bring a good book / deck of cards / iPad etc - you'll be grand

Thanks all! We will probably use Cobh. Now fully booked for 2 x 2.5 month trips in 2019.

Cobh is great, I spent two nights there last week, peaceful and quiet. The train is dead handy for getting into Cork for a bit of retail therapy.
