Dolmen breakdown insurance

Having the misfortune of breaking down in Germany this year I used the breakdown part of Dolmen Insurance to have the van towed to the nearest Fiat garage. When I contacted the insurance I was quizzed about my campsite booking. It appears that to avail of the breakdown service you must have a campsite booked. Fortunately I had booked into the Caravan Salon at Dusseldorff for 3 nights and was able to produce proof. I normally don’t book sites so I could have been out of pocket quite a bit. Has anyone come across this. I’m thinking of booking 1 night in a cheap site on the last night of our holiday in February. Thoughts?

Is repatriation included within your policy? It pays to read the small print, check your vehicle size is covered, age is covered and that there are no “up to” limits on recovery if taking your MH abroad.

That sounds absolutely crazy. You could be traveling and booking onto sites as you go.

Repatriation is not included, they will tow you to the nearest garage. They paid for B&B for the three nights the van was off the road. I have been with Dolmen for over 15 years and have been lucky not to have a breakdown. A plus is they cover the length 8m and weight 4500kg of my van but I might look for another insurer on renewal.

That sounds crazy, what happens if you're travelling to stay with friends or to your own holiday home ? Is it a fiendish plot by councils and the insurance industry to force us to use sites ?
