We are planning our first trip to France in our camper from end of June 2019 to mid/late July. Any advice appreciated. We wish to bring our two small dogs. We realise we have to sort out passports and paperwork for them. Can you advise what ferry carrier is best and some of the do’s and do nots for such a trip. Thanks

For the pet passports speak to a vet well in advance as you’ll need rabies jabs at least a month before hand. And other vaccinations. But not worming pills as they need to be done in France at least 1 day before you sail and no more than 5.
If you are using Aires then get all the Aires book or get some of the apps available like park4 a night, camper contact, Camperstop. If using campsites look into acsi card but the discount may not apply to all sites especially in July.
One last tip drive on the right.

If you are taking dogs to France then do a bit of research on processionary caterpillars which can cause major problems for pets. I can’t remember the peak season for them, but forewarned is forearmed.

My understanding is that the dogs are kept in a cage on the car deck for the duration of the journey (18hrs). You get 2 or 3 visits! Someone will correct me. It maybe worth looking at the land bridge. Shorter journeys and in some case the dogs can stay in the van.

There are two main routes to get to France

Landbridge via Britain leaving Ireland from Rosslare, Dublin, Warrenpoint, Belfast, Larne then multiple crossing routes of the English Channel

Direct from Ireland to France leaving from Dublin, Cork, Rosslare to either Roscoff or Cherbourg. The operators are Irish Ferries, Stena and Brittany Ferries. Duration 16/20hours. Two styles of ferry, either the so called ‘cruise ferry’ which have more facilities and tend to be more expensive. Also the economy type with less facilities and in some cases your Motorhome is on an open deck for the crossing. The most cost effective are usually Stena and Irish Ferries. Some deals are available from time to time, with 10% up to maybe 25% discount. Difficult to predict when offers are on.

Each leg can be booked separately so possible to go out from say Rosslare and return via Britain. It may be cheaper to come back via Britain in July but you have to weigh up the driving time and fuel costs. Cheapest English Channel is often the tunnel dependant on length of Motorhome.

Irish Ferries charge for dogs on Ireland-France routes, Stena do not. The kennels on the Stena ship are on deck, so you can check on the dog whenever you like but you'll still be restricted on when you can take them out.

Dog options on the sailing:
Irish Ferries (Rosslare/Cherbourg)- Dogs in kennels, max 2 visits to feed and walk them.
Stena (Rosslare/Cherbourg)- Dogs can stay in van or in kennels below deck, max 2 visits to feed and walk them.
Or
(Stena Horizon) Ask for kennels on deck 4, you have access as many times and whatever times you wish to see them. (our preferred option)

Vets advice previous is spot on.

Processionary caterpillar, only a problem early to mid spring (temperature dependent) and really only in southern France and Spain.... deadly to dogs and death is common.

Advice already given on travel distances again is spot on.... don’t cram in to much distance, Normandy/Brittany and Loire is vast area to see, and to boot it is a lovely area too. Get the Apps and the books although the bigger supermarkets have really good aire guides that cover much more than the English versions and cost about €10.
Enjoy the trip, ask questions here and help will be at hand.

And welcome to MotorhomeCraic by the way.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. We will do the planning and look at the ferry options. Roslare would be our departure point. From the messages we got so far Stena seem to be the best option taking into account our canine passengers and value. Really looking forward to the trip. We have the asci book etc. Again thanks for your time and practical guidance.

My preference for online searches is

Searchforsites.co.uk

Simply type the destination and it will give you pretty much all the options, campsites, ACSI discount sites, aires, France passion sites, wild spots, parking, service points etc. This is done in a radius from your request. You can link to each location shown. Many will have reviews by people who have visited.
