It shows very little respect for other peoples property, when the film crew would film them driving with the tail light dragging along the ground.

You have to remember, some diretor was given a remit, probably something like, 'make them look like eejits, but make sure it's funny'. He would have been given a budget, so the van was prime for damage. The show that we saw was the directors / producers view of humour. It was made for tv, thats all. No surgery nor fatalities, (human) were involved.
