I think that only applies to the harbour. There are plenty of other parking spaces before you hit the harbour. Any time we head down for the day, we park in the normal spaces beside the green space.
Are you going to hang around howth or are you heading into Dublin?

Not sure yet but probably stay a night, leave it there for the next day whilst going to Dublin and staying that night when we get back...
we have a vw transporter so it should fit in a bay...would that sound feasable?

AFAIK from latest reports: Unless your van can fit inside a bay you are no longer welcome.
A little like these inconsiderates at Howth harbour only last weekend!
Over four bays each, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in June.

After some of the motorhoming behaviour seen in Howth last summer I can totally understand why they're banned. Whilst these inconsiderate owners treated the place like a campsite (taking up numerous parking spots, blocking more with tables,l and chairs while drinking their own vodka at 2pm in the afternoon on a busy June bank holiday weekend), they are in the minority of motorhome owners; but sadly they are the ones that the general public, local businesses, residents and staff will remember and give us all a bad name

I have a feeling that those two Motorhomes in the photo are Hired Vans from outside the state, they have Yellow number plates and they look the same. What can be done about that kind of behaviour? I think they should be clamped on the spot and given a hefty fine and I am sure they would park them correctly the next time.

Giving them the benefit of doubt and if they are hire vans I would see no problem in one of the more experienced motorhomers speaking nicely to them and explaining to them the errors of what they are doing.
Do not let us loose sight of what really caused the problem originally at Howth,the same people that are now making a nuisance of themselves in other nearby locations.

Wait and see the Harbour Masters opinions on camper vans when they close off part of the harbour and put a motorhome village there at €60 a berth a night for some upcoming nautical event. Them's the pictures we need.

Would have to agree with Pat they do look like rental vans with UK registration. But the picture of other van parked with rear overhanging footpath looks different. Regardless of whether rental or not they all should have been clamped and fined.

We passed through the harbour in Dun Laoghaire about a month ago in the car. I saw the large winnebago overhanging the peir, but it looked to me that it hadn’t move in months.
There was a couple of other van type campers but they were nicely slotted into spaces in corners, at footpaths, etc that didn't interfere with anyone else.

Is there some standard parking etiquette that we should know? Not trying to be thick or miss the obvious but as total newbs we are figuring things out in bits and pieces. Are we allowed to park in normal spaces and pay for two or four spaces if necessary if we overspill?

i think most on here agree if your van dosent fit in a space, you shouldnt be parking there.
Never overhang the paths or walkways.
And then all the usual stuff that you wouldnt normally do.

Would it not be an idea if one of the admins wrote (as in letter and stamp) to the Harbour Master at Howth to establish the ground rules rather than work on conjecture and opinion.
In my humble opinion he or she has little legal powers to discriminate against a class of vehicle. From my reading of the regulations it's an all or nothing approach to the implementation of those regs. If they want to enforce them, ALL users of Howth Harbour under the control of the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine must pay for parking as part of those regs.

Thats a good idea. If no one else wants to, i will do a letter and send it off asking about the regs and requirements for campers/motorhomes parking in Howth, particularly in the car parking areas and off the harbour.

There is no doubt that things were badly abused here but why are these resturants,shops and pubs not making more noise if they are loosing out so badly?
Not all of the people who used and some abused this facility frequented these establishments.

Plenty of changes since my last visit. Signs saying €150 on the spot parking fines, no mention of who owns the sign or what Bye Laws (if any) that may be breached. Area around the working trawlers has been fenced and barriered off giving the trawlermen a safer working environment.
On the middle pier where most vans park on the left side as you head out to sea a dedicated pedestrian area has been marked out and a parking post has been cleverly placed in the centre of each parking space so there can be no overhang onto the pedestrian area.
On the right hand side before the height barrier a number of van were parked nose in with the overhang out to the traffic side.
Interestingly enough, from my days in traffic enforcement, the wheels of the vans were within the bay markings which in my day was within the letter of the law.
Looks like something we can live with. About 8 vans there last night from memory.

The Hypocrisy of Howth. you can't park a van in case you block a fisherman from going about his lawful business. of making a mess no matter where they go.
The First photo might suite bigger vans since the bays are longer, although you might incrouch on the yello area.
Note the lack of tax or insurance on the white van and the white line position, both it and the caravan with its tow-hitch in the walking area are, have EHU and are used to house presumably out of State well paid fishing boat crew.

Jeez, Howth for all of its square meterage is only a minute part of the island. There are much better places to go, and friendly natives. If these jumped up jobsworths want to play Hitler, let them. I'm inclined to agree with you, I only ever go there to buy fish and also a couple of times a year to walk the head. But the thing that bothers me is the Department Of THe Marine is behind this and they have the responsibility for every harbour in the country and they're flexing their mussels in the big harbours now, when will they get around to blocking all the rest.
And double standards should be outed where they are found. and Ministers Creed and Doyle will be reminded of the same in the morning.

We stopped going also, but then I was never fussed on Howth anyhow. Expensive place to eat and drink, and sitting in a car park isn't really our thing.

Haven't been there since the ban.No point going where you are not wanted,after all it is a fishing port and when I did park there I felt that I was in the way.
