We moved from a tent to a trailer tent in the past and found it took far longer to set up a trailer tent & it was less comfortable than a small caravan which we later moved to. It also had a much greater desire to snake about when towed above 50mph compared to the caravan.

Trying to get a starter for our daughter and her little boys something we can tie with us to sites
What about a drive away awning ,I got one a Khyam 2bed rooms and large living area ,for our Daughter and two girls to use ,its an ideal way, we have all used it together, so she has her car to go off for trips . She used it with the van on her own, also as a stand alone tent, just with the car ,

I've had a few folding campers, Dandy's, indestructible, easy and light to tow, relatively easy/quick to erect and no issues about packing away wet... few here though, i always purchased in UK.. might be worth looking at..

The air beam tents are competitive priced now and are pretty easy to put up. Their only weakness is the crap ground pegs supplied with them.
I have seen on our travels, a few tenting families with a covered trailer towed behind their car. In the trailer is a household cooker, a small porty loo, basic sink and a gas water heater. The trailer would be a 8×4 or in farming terms, a 2 beast trailer.
It could be a cheap starter option.
