BT Fon roaming abroad

We use BT fon when out & about here in Northern Ireland, but from what I've read it can be used in a lot of other parts of the world. I found this page on the BT site http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-…/td-p/8104

Has anyone on here had recent personal experience of using fon abroad?

I use BT fon too and am just back from France where I tried it loads of places but it never worked for me> :-(
