Safe overnight stop along A75 or Carlisle

I know there is an App but looking for any recommendations for a safe overnight stop along the A75 or up to Carlisle - getting a late evening ferry and don't want to drive too far on the other side.

There's a layby about a mile north of Stranraer a lot of us have used that , quite safe and lovely views
