World War One sites

hi, we are passing through from Calais on way to Spain in july. We have 5 weeks so no rush so wanted to find some WW1 museums up North to visit en route. I have children and me and my son enjoy the WW2 stuff that we have been to and we have also been to Oradour Sur Glane. can anyone recommend and museums with good displays of WW1 equipment etc and ideally a replica trench set up that is worth a visit. Thanks

Beaumont Hamill, Thiepval memorial and the Ulster Tower are all in the one area covering a good part of the Somme, we did those last year after visiting La Coupole which was a V2 site. There are a number of others which are more towards the Belgian side of things (Ypres/ Menin Gate etc.) but I am sure others may be able to guide you better.

if you google Vimy Ridge it is a memorial to the Canadian troops who died during ww1 it is near Arras ?Somme Northern France
I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area it will meet all your requirements, easy access, easy parking, allow enough time to see it all a few hours is not enough , very emotional place

Le Blockhaus d'Eperlecgues near St Omer, N. 50 49' 36.82", E. 2 10' 56.32" This is a very interesting place, from where Hitler intended launching V2 Balistic missiles to bomb London. Luckily it was bombed by the Allies before it went into use. Well worth a visit.

That's La Coupole which I referred to, def worth a visit.

La Coupole (The Dome) is nearer St Omer than Le Blockhaus d'Eperiecgues its co- ords are N. 50 42' 21.03", E. 2 14' 27.55". I agree it is also well worth a visit. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

We're just back from France and whilst there we visited some of the WW1 sites. We went to Verdun to the museum and visited the village of Fleury-devant-Douamont which was one of a number of villages that were completely destroyed during the conflict. To walk around the cratered area reading the markers showing the position of homes and various businesses in the town brought home to me the devastation and death in this fairly small area. We also visited the Ossuary of Douamant which contains the remains of over 100,000 unknown soldiers. These places should be visited to understand the sacrifice made by so many young men in the name of there countries. A real humbling experience

Yes it is an eye opening sight, I took my dad ,now long gone, to France to revisit his retreat back from the Belgium /Germany border to Dunkirk. We went in to a cemetary and went around to see if anyone he knew was in there, When we were finished he said come and have a look at this and took me across the road to another cemetary that was 10 times bigger than the one we left. He said there was more people lost in one battle in first war than the whole of the second. Only when you see it in person the reality sets in
