Looking for a family Campervan for a family of 4

Looking for something in between 1996-2001
Right hand drive preferred
4-6 berth
Rear bunks would be very desirable. (Riviera etc)
Must be leak and rust free and have a valid test.
Overall very good condition.

Open to other options.

Can you also say where in the country you are as that will make a difference re VRT or not and also have you a budget in mind.

I'm in kilkenny and looking at 10-12k max, I've missed out on two so far that were in this price range due to not being able to travel to view fast enough because of work commitments. Any help is very much appreciated

welcome to the craic! I was in your position a year and a half ago, i know exactly what it's like trying to look across the sites and get there before others!

It is LHD - there's one or two threads on here about the differences people have found with LHD that might be worth a read!

not sure if you are searching by price, but I always search by 1-2k above what I can afford... in the hope that there's wiggle room

Ye I was looking at them and there's another one that fits the bill perfect but it's a lhd. Is it a major headache with the lhd or do you just get used to it quick enough. Il look at the other threads on it. Thanks for the help.

I don't think that LHD should be a deal breaker.
You will adopt very quickly, and to boot it will be great for a continental jaunt !
I've driven LHD quite a bit and after the initial inevitable differences you don't really notice.
Mine is RHD and take it to France often, it's perfect as long as you have a co-pilot (wife, Jack Russell, mistress, etc) to give you a heads up at junctions etc.
The other thing with a LHD is that the habitation door usually will be on the right, that means it will open onto the road and traffic when you are parked on the left of the road here in Ireland/UK , you need to be aware of that. Again, you will adopt to that quickly and you can always park in such a way that that doesn't really matter.
Definitely don't rule out the LHD, many here in Ireland are such. When I change mine I'll buy LHD, but that is only because much of our motorhoming is on the continent. Keep us updated, get her bought and get out to a couple of craic meets to we get a look !...... Good luck with your search.

I've only driven LHD motorhome and have found it to be spot on! of course it does mean waking her good self at toll bridges

definitely wouldn't rule it out - and worth going along for a test drive.. I had test driven 5 vans before we bought ours!

I may have to reconsider the lhd option by the info im receiving here. The main reason we were going for it was the wife said she wouldn't feel confident driving the lhd if she was heading off with friends and I wasn't on the trip. Another question I was looking for info on was in relation to the leisure battery and how long it would last for general use, lighting etc.

Thanks for all the replies it's all very much appreciated as we are learning as we go.

When I had my own first Van with one Battery would have lasted day/day1/2
Just depends on Battery and what your using,now like most of us I've 2 leisure
Batteries fitted and a Solar Panel best thing I've ever acquired for a Motorhome
Used to have to start van and recharge batteries now Solar panel most of year keeps
LB'S topped up all the time and makes Wildcamping no problem cheers Baz

My first van the leisure batt only lasted 2 months it's the luck of the draw when it comes to batts

Solar, solar, solar...... and a couple of leisure batteries.
Burn all hair driers etc, make wife hang out the window to dry hair !...... Smallish inverter for necessities and your leisure batteries will do a long while.
Have wilded for weeks without ever hooking up the EHU lead.

Still in the market if anyone is looking to sell theirs on ar if anyone knows of anyone. It's been a bit or hardship so far with sellers not being easy to deal with. One wouldn't allow a mechanic check it as he was one and said it was OK (like I'm gonna just believe the seller himself) and numerous others were very odd in their sales technics. I can already see its gonna be a long journey to get what we are after.

Also does anyone know how everyone expects you to just come straight away, does no one with a camper have work commitments.

I would not rule out LHD. I have just bought one due to it being in my price range. I was nervous driving it first time home from garage, but was amazed at how quickly I got used to it! Once you have the outside double mirrors, you can see very well. I find being on the left is good for passing parked cars, cyclists and avoiding overhanging tree branches

I have a left hand drive Citroen Mehari Car as they only made them like that and I prefer it actually to right hand drive.

Thanks for all the replies and I drove a lhd camper yesterday and it was find a bit confusing at the first turn, braking atnd reaching for the left but after that it was fine. I did find that the pedals seemed to be maybe a few inches right of my footing centre but all was ok after the first km. Definitely not ruling it out now.

Just a taught for you I have a RHD so for driving in France I got a stick on driver-side mirror the one with the long vision ( with the line down the glass ) and put it upside down over the near-side mirror, it helps on the dual/motorways to see what is coming up on my near-side when going to overtake and when pulling out.
