Top skylight

Hi all,

Having woken up to ice on the inside of the skylight on Saturday morning... I thought it was time to address the problem!!

The skylight over the bed has been a constant source of condensation, even when there is no real evidence elsewhere in the van. The problem is that the wood around t has clearly absorbed moisture and there is some small bubbling in the roof. It appears someone has done work on it at some stage as there's a black sealant around it on the exterior that doesn't look like factory quality.

I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a clever solution or have any recommendations.

We were thinking of treating the wood to help seal it again.. But wanted to see if there was anything else we should consider!

As always, thanks in advance!

(I'll add another photo after I go and resize it!)

Thanks for the reply! Is there a lot involved in getting it off?

That wood looks like it needs to be replaced as well. Once damp gets in, its a disaster waiting to happen. consider taking it to a specialist to get a longer life from the moho?

The rooflight should be held on with about 8 screws or bolts ,but the first thing is to get all that silicone of and see what's under it clean and dry it ,i see it's a fiat how old is your van

Thanks - will do!

Might bring it up to the local chap and get a quote.. I'd prefer to do the work myself, but haven't got a dry store anywhere at the moment that I could do it in! Is there a ball park figure for getting the work done?

Another option would be to put a larger one in which would possibly eliminate any damp wood etc, but again get someone to give professional advice/price

I know there is a motorhome "crash" repair centre near Borrisokane. Maybe there is one near you.

FC - I like that idea!!

Yes - We're only ten minutes from Maynooth MH's and they've been very good to me so far, so I'll drop into him and get an opinion, try get this knocked out sooner rather than later!

FWIW

I would certainly remove it, check timbers, replace and seal with the likes of Sikaflex. Don't think disaster, it should be pretty straight forward to remove, replace and seal.

I'm Maynooth, I'll give you a hand to sort it if you're anywhere within striking distance.
The problem and the answer is under that Silicone on the roof, I suspect.
As advised, you need to get the roof light off and see whats going on and repair/replace the wooden frame if necessary.
Send me a pm with you phone number and I'll give you a shout
Don't worry, I'm sure it's easily fixable .
regards,
Joe

I'm in Maynooyh.....sorry
Hadn't read the above post properly.
Maynooth Motorhomes seem very helpful and would do a very good repair for you I'm sure, but more than welcome to a dig out if you decide to fix it yourself.

Good old Douzeper is correct about Silaflex, its been holding my Solar Panel on since 2004.But you have a few variations of Silaflex, So make sure you have the right one. I have in the past gone to a good boat chandlers and bought the one they use for sealing portholes .If it can keep the ocean out then its good enough for me

The one that i would recomend is Sikaflex 291i which is designed for the use that nilrac describes

Killiand...its a doddle. ive replaced three in my knaus last year outside on a dry early spring day. Stripped and cleaned all old sealant and bedded new ones in sikaflex. Donaghey have great priced 400mm mini heike type units for great price...they really modernise the roof look inside
