Engine seized

'99 VW campervan on way home from Tipperary to Dublin end of last month. THere was a very faint flapping sound and then a whoosh like something being stuck in a vacuum cleaner and it stopped. No warning lights came on. Sent back to dealer and his mechanic has said engine seized solid. He has not worked on it to see why yet but what could be the cause of this? It was not left sitting, I drove it for at least 30 miles every couple of weeks to keep battery etc working. Checked oil before leaving that day. No problems on the outward journey, except I thought it was using more diesel than usual.
Anyone an idea what the cause might be please? If mechanic comes back with something that could be my fault, my warrant will be void. :(

Could be the timing belt broke.
Before Christmas, I started my van and heard a whirr like a bearing sound. It was fine the day before when I parked it. I nursed it out to my mechanic, the noise changed to a loud metallic rattle, and the whirring noise would occasionally come back. On one occassion I got a strong smell and smoke. When investigated it transpired that a bolt had unwound for one of the tensioner pulleys and dropped into the timing belt housing. It was lying under the bottom pulley spigot and rubbing away the belt. The mechanic said I was extremely lucky not to have seized the engine. Fortunately I only needed new tensioners and a belt, around 80.00. This time the bolts were secured in with lock-tight.
When I purchased the van in June privately, I asked the owner if the timing belt had been changed. He said that his mechanic told him at his last service that he thought he recalled changing it the previous year, but he had not saved the paperwork and advised that I do it again just incase. I planned to have it done in February when its due a service again.
I found the old belt in the van garage since and it was indeed changed just over 2 years ago as the mechanic had a note attached with both the date and mileage on it. The previous owner had done little or no mileage since it had been changed, but I had done nearly 5000 miles on it since June.
Sorry to hear about your problem, I hope you get it resolved favourably.

Never a good time for a problem like this, but at least you got it home, not stuck in France or somewhere.

If your engine had seized the driving wheels would have locked solid,it will be some other fault,w/pump timeing belt wheels or alt bearings

No warning lights, just little flapping noise before the big noise. Checked oil before travelling and tow guy checked it and it was ok. Just waiting to hear back from garage.
