I've just read an article about de-scaling the boiler, is this necessary and how is it done. I've tried a search on MHC , but can't find any references. :'(

Thanks Jon, the writer of the article said he used 10 litres of white wine vinegar, but didn't describe a method . Seems a lot of vinegar!

Have a look at this thread on motorhomefacts.

http://forums.motorhomefacts.c…oiler.html

If you enter the words descaling the boiler in the search box it will turn up other threads. It would be good if you publish the result of your chosen method so that we have it for future reference on motorhomecraic.

Good luck and happy descaling.

Davy

The things you learn on MHC ... I would never have thought of descaling the boiler.

I never did and have no intention unless it gives me trouble.

I reckon it depends where you live and where you tour. I find that the electric kettle furs up quite quickly when we are down in west Cork, but when we come north again to the granite of the Mournes, it gradually descales itself, so based on that I tend not to bother.

I would have to add that we don't use the boiler much except when we need a large amount of water heated for showers. A kettle usually covers the dishes more economically and quickly.

We are the same, we dont use the boiler enough to be concerned about it so its not something i am going to worry about.

Thanks, Davy and all who responded, I will try it out after Christmas. I have just bought the MH second hand and don't know where the previous owner toured. On doing more searching, I found that Truma recommend annual de-scaling and preferably twice per year. This is probably overkill, but I thought I would try it once to have start point.

If you live (or are filling up with soft water) then there would be no need to be descaling the boiler as the soft water will descale it over time, once the soft water flows through the boiler it will sort it self out,

Truma will have no hesitation in advising you to descale and no doubt recommend a truma branded product (i could be wrong on this so don't quote me on it ;-) )

Trust me the less pulling and dragging you do with the pipework the better,
if it aint broke don't fix it

In my Motorhome manual it recommends Certisil and the water should be boiled to 70 c I'm under the impression that you should do this if your van has been used in an area which has hard water if in N/l or the south you shouldn't need to descale your heater just a flush out with winevinger or Formica acid and then was thoroughly with fresh water

Truma's latest advice:

1. Make up a solution of 50% water and 50% White Wine Vinegar
2. Completely fill the appliance's water-tank with the solution.
3. Heat solution to the maximum water temperature the appliance can attain.
4. Allow solution to cool.
5. Empty solution from water-tank.
6. Rinse water-tank thoroughly by pumping plenty of fresh water through it.

When I bought our previously loved van, there was grunge hanging on the mouth of the taps. I bought Truma's cleaner and worked out it was citric acid. I bought more citric acid from the pharmacy and filled the whole thing up.
I ran the boiler overnight and then pumped it all through, flushed. etc..
No problems since.
We use the Truma blown air heating so the boiler is on even though we don't use the shower.
