Heading down to Sneem on 22nd December.
Could bomb down, but would prefer to stop over in the Midlands somewhere.
Any suggestions?
Not into wild camping, or expensive campsites.
Thanks in advance.

Down the coast via Galway to Kerry Saturday morning.

Agree with Dave, apart from wilding your choices are limited, you could go out to Howth for an overnight then onwards. Why not set off a bit earlier and do it in a single day with breaks at the various services?

How about Howth or Greystones the evening before and then down the coast to Ardmore or Midleton ,on to Sneem.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Have looked at JJF & Eirebus suggestions & either looks about halfway, so could work.
Also considered TFC option which might be a runner.
Need to look at Ally's to see location.
Might be better at home if this crap weather stays, but Bessie needs a run out too.
Will let you know.
In the meantime, you all have a great Christmas & New Year.

Hi guys, been out of circulation for a while.
Didn't all go to plan.
Arrived Roosky. Yes nice spot. Would be better in spring/summer. Only ones there, so quiet & no, we didn't annoy the locals.
They are a very friendly bunch. Felt safe behind the locked gate.
Glad we had hookup & glad we took the small oil filled heater we bought in Home Bargains with us, otherwise we would have been frozen.

Blow heating took the battery down very quickly.
Battery charger not working off ehu. Charged no problem when vehicle running, but we could not effectively run the van heating.

We stayed 2 nights in Roosky as planned, but decided, as we were told no facilities in Sneem over the winter, we would not risk going further & having to slum it when we have a perfectly nice home in Carrickfergus.

We headed home & i am in the process of sorting out on board charger, solar panel, & 2 leisure batteries.

Questions:
Does the solar panel charge via the solar controller, then the psu on board, then to the batteries, or direct to the batteries via the solar controller?
I only have room for one leisure battery in its current location. I could fit an additional one above it, but that is inside the van, in under seating storage. Is this a safe position, as I have read that charging batteries give off hydrogen gas?

I am hoping that if we have all this, we will not be caught out again. :'(

yes, solar panels connected to the controller and solar controller connected to leisure batteries, or to starter battery too if a dual charge controller.
I only have room for one leisure battery in its current location. I could fit an additional one above it, but that is inside the van, in under seating storage. Is this a safe position, as I have read that charging batteries give off hydrogen gas?yes, will be OK provided you fit the vent pipe for the battery and down thru the floor and secure the battery properly. Also, battery needs connecting in parallel with good current carrying capability wire fused at both sides on the positive cable.

I am hoping that if we have all this, we will not be caught out again. :'(
Agree.... but, you need to sort out the onboard charger too so you have the option of charging the batteries on EHU

Thanks JJF.
I feel like a non driving motorhoming disaster atm. We have had so many problems. But still learning big time.
Have a guy sorting the on board charger on Monday. Should've done it sooner.

Just a bit concerned about connecting it all up, as some posts have stated install the controller as close to the battery as possible & my battery location is as far away from cable entry into vehicle as it can get & closest location is about 2M, but my ideal location would be close to entry into van which would be about 6M cable run.

Suggest you consider a MPPT controller as this will be more efficient than the standard controller. Does not really matter where the controller is located, the important thing is to keep the overall distance from the solar panel to the battery via the controller as short as possible. Use at least 6mm square cable for the whole route, this will compensate for the length.

If the solar panels are going to be a DIY job THIS GUY sells panels ar a very competitive price and will also supply the proper cable made up to the length you require. He also has his own recommended charger/controller but THESE are highly recommended and produce a good bit of charge even on a clear winters day

Thanks again guys for all the advise.
MPPT is recommended & is the way I plan to go.
I can't do anything now til the new year as everywhere is closed, but need to decide quickly so that I can have everything installed for 14th.
Fingers crossed.
