With seeming more and more tech stuff coming with us and most of the modern stuff now seeming to charge via a usb connection wondered if anybody had "upgraded" their sockets to these type

I wouldn't do it just now. USB Type C is out and getting popular with Phone makers, although it is somewhat backwards compatible.

But are the cables not going from A - C/lightning etc or are they starting to go type c to type c

Not sure, last phone came with TypeC to TypeC, current phone came with A - C

Lightening is different than C AFAIK, Apple are changing to C also, along with Samsung, Oneplus already changed.
