'Free' Trip to Britain - Stena

Travelled to France on holiday this year from Rosslare and received an email from Stena to say that we qualified for a free trip to Britain. However, every time I've tried to book it (the link gives you Ireland to Fishguard or Holyhead) using both routes, I have been charged for the crossing. All says 'free' until you click on the dates. Fancy going to Holyhead at Easter but my Free trip is going to cost 180 Euros. Has anyone been able to book their 'Free Trip' for Free?

Many thanks Douzeper, (and 2424) but still don't understand the 'Free' part as we had no indication of £30 surcharge, no change of vehicle details and no extra passengers and it still came up as £180 charge. Have emailed stena for clarification, when and if I get a reply will keep you all posted.

I can only speak for the Irish Ferries offer which is similar. We have made a Dublin Holyhead trip for the last few years. Their offer seems to be only subject to a booking fee of a few euros. However we have in the past upgraded to use the fast ferry, or this year on a conventional ferry we booked a cabin both ways, even though the trip is only a few hours. We get an early ferry so are on the road from about 5 am so we can get the head down for a couple of hours. On the return trip the boat was bunged with coachloads of teenagers so cabin hideaway was great. The cost of our Wales trip this year was about €80 if my memory is good.

One thing about the Irish Ferries offer is that some dates will attract a premium. X mass, Easter, bank holiday weekends and rugby internationals. Might be worth checking other dates as you might be clashing with an event boosting the cost.

Hi. Yes I got a quote for the about the same price. The "free" part I think is based on 2 people in a car (correct me if I am wrong), so I knew that going into the bookings page. So to bring the kids and the motorhome incurred the additional cost. I didnt complete the booking I was just curious regarding price. That said though, we are thinking of booking something in March for somewhere like Logoland in Windsor. So is 180E expensive for 2 adults/2kids/motor home?

Not quite, I emailed them and got a reply, link here (http://imgur.com/9e1QY9z), basically the fare is free but subject to you travelling in non peak periods and you must travel in the same vehicle that you went to France in with max. two people. Cabins etc cost extra .
The dates you want are ok and I suppose if you are travelling in a smaller vehicle they wont mind but you would have to contact them regarding this .

Just back from using the Stena Free Trip to Britain offer. Brought the wife's car (XC90 7-Seater) which is shorter than the MH but not that much lighter!

I added two extra passengers on the outward trip and a third passenger on the return trip as my niece came home from Uni for "reading week".

No problem at all bringing the car as per my booking. Stena upgraded me with two seats to the Stena Plus lounge and Premium boarding which was very handy - I have now reached Gold status on my Stena Extra card. Excellent outward crossing - you really couldn't tell the ship was moving, pretty rough on the return leg as there were storm force winds (not Stena's fault). Overall excellent Stena!
