France Holiday

Off the Ferry this morning and the plan was to head for Arzon. Drove for a couple of hours and decided I needed a smoke and coffee break. So we came off the N165 and drove to a town called Chateaulin. Whilst availing of said coffee and smoke break a fellow MHer from Co.Monaghan pulled up in front and we started to discuss all things Motorhoming. He was on his way back to the boat to head home, and was mildly jealous of us just starting our 3 1/2 week holiday. Despite this jealousy he gave me directions to another little place called Sainte Anne la Palud. No facilities only great views. So the first 2 pics are Chateaulin and the rest are where we are staying tonight, along with 3 other MHers from germany, France and the Netherlands.

Weather is top notch Jon. This where we are staying at the minute. Decided to do a bigger drive today to get the miles in. Dee wants to go to lourdes. Scenery on the way down here is awesome. All the town's and villages are so tidy and well kept. We stopped in Arzon for some Scooby snacks and witnessed a sea going yacht being towed by a tractor round a roundabout. That's something you don't see every day. Anyway Dee is out sunbathing and I'm going for a wee lie down.

There is no place like France for motor homing in my humble opinion.

For sure Jack.
French adopt a pro-active mentality towards motorhomes.

Just for that, you're not getting any wine big lad.

Anyway to continue with the trip, we're now in La Rochelle, parked up in a campsite called Les Sables. 18.50 euros with the acsi card. Electric included. Free use of the swimming pool and all the other usual facilities. Dee wanted to stop in a campsite to get some washing done, (she's a clean freak). Getting on the road early in the morning to do 280 miles to lourdes. Wish me luck :'( Once the 2 days in lourdes are done, then ( hold on she just mentioned 3 days, 🇧🇭 ) I,me, head buck cat, top dog have free reign to go where I like. Me thinks the Pyrenees are going to get a visit from the Irish.
Will continue tomorrow when I get to lourdes.

We stayed at this site in July.

http://www.camping-hautes-pyrenees.com/

ACSI, small, clean, with small pool and food. Bus at gate, although we cycled into Lourdes which is not that far, or you can walk through the grounds of the grotto which will take about 15 minutes. We were doing the laundry too.

There appear to be two Aires in the town, one In Boulevarde du Lapacca near the Cemetry which I looked at. Plain parking in a nondescript residential street opposite flats, I think there was a toilet. Or possibly park where the buses do, just beyond the aire. I did not visit it.

There also appears to be parking in a large car park beside the river on Esplanade du Paradis. I did not recce it on the ground. Both locations show up on google.

Enjoy the trip.

Well, after 6 hrs and 55 minutes, 277 miles, we've made it to Lourdes. Had to do a bit of a mystery tour through Bordeaux due to a pile up on the dual carriageway. My cartographic ( is there such a word) knowledge of France is Nil, so thank goodness I had Julia. Yes I've named my sat nav Julia. Came off the dual carriageway at the first opportunity and got to see Bordeaux, courtesy of Julia. Anyway, after about 1/2 hour of driving through Bordeaux got back on the dual carriageway and proceeded south. I'd put in No Tolls on Julia and eventually we came of the dual carriageway and onto single lane roads through some fantastic scenery. Some idyllic towns and villages. Definitely worth the drive. Fields upon fields of corn and fields upon fields of Sunflowers. Although I'd love to know why they all appeared to be dead. The further south we got the hotter it became. It's 8.30 pm at the minute and it's 27 degrees C. At 5.30 it was 32 degrees, in the shade.Although we've a cracking view of the Pyrenees. That's where we heading tomorrow after we've done the touristy bit in Lourdes, the higher we go the colder ( I hope) it's going to get.

The sweat will be breaking on you if you drive up to Gavarnie.! Best part of 20 miles of twisting, narrow mountain roads. But worth it.

May I recommend the Aire at Lac du Payole. Fantastic views. Use the one just off the main road, past the shops and turn right over the bridge and you are there. There is another beside the chalets and bar at the head of the lake with toilet, and grey disposal, but didn't see water.

This is an excellent stopover if you want to want to drive up the col d'Aspin or the Col de Tourmolet. Both white knuckle drives but just need constant concentration. Aspin is the easier, and both are about 5 miles or so of narrow, twisty roads with big drops.
