Hi Folks,

Just found that one of my garage door in damp, very damp. I want to remove the innards and start new. Can I just rip out the wallboard and insulation and replace them as before or is there anything i should be aware of before I do this? How do I know what the outer skin of my motorhome is made from? FRP etc?

The leak was caused by broken door retainer that left water in.

Again, thanks in advance!

Have you found where the water is getting in I would try and fix the leak before cutting anything what you find in older vans you have the outer skin polystyrene in the middle and then the inner skin ,is the inner skin damaged ,the outer skin and the middle will dry out .l try just drying it out.what kind of m/h have you got

If you stop the leak, would you get away with taking the door off and put it in a small room with a humidifier to dry it out?

The outer skin is grand, the inner wall board is very spongy, not sure about the polystyrene but i would imagine its soaked. There is a small rip in the inner wall board and it's soaked and very spongy. I was thinking of removing the poly and inner wall board and replacing with new stuff. If I did this was would I use to bond the poly to the outer skin? If i was to try drying it out, could i leave a dehumidifier in the garage of the camper to dry it out or would I have to remove the door? Apologies for all the questions.

You could put a dehumidifier in the garage and leave it running, just make sure you have closed any vents or you will be tryign to dry out the atmosphere.

Slightly different topic:

I realise you have a leak but condensation seems to be a big problem in garages, I noticed at the weekend the bottom of my garage door was spongy about 4 inches in height. I have noticed condensation in the garage before so it is either getting condensation or it might be coming in from the top of the door. That bit is easily solved, the problem was the door couldn't dry out.

I removed the veneer at the bootom of the door about an 1/8 of the way up and it dried out in a day in the sun, the veneer was stopping the wood from drying. I plan to trim it off neat, then treat the wood with a stain the same colour as the veneer above it.

I am considering venting the garage to allow more air to circulate as I don;t think there is enough.

@ Douzeper - what is the remedy if water is coming in from the top of the door? Put a drip stop above the door? I have 2 garage doors and the other one is perfect.

By cutting the veneer do you mean cut a strip off the inner wallboard of the garage door to expose the polystyrene underneath? I'm new to this so sorry if that is a silly question.

I had an Auto trail before that leaked from the top of garage door, that is exactly what I done, put a drip strip above the door.

THIS type of thing.

My present van I haven't investigated enough yet, but it is either coming in from the top of the door, I see the rubber seal has worn, or it is condensation that cannot get away due to a rubber seal at the boom. See pic below........

I removed the veneer, leaving the wood behind it. The veneer was stopping the wood from drying, condensation isn't usually problem as long as it can dry out. If you look at the pic you can also see a rubber seal at the bottom of the door, I have a funny feeling that it is stopping condensation from getting away and holding it in the bottom of the door. But again, it could be leaking from the worn rubber seal at the top of the door, I'll get inside the garage later with a torch and get someone to spray it with a hose.

@ Douzeper - excellent stuff - thanks for so much for the detailed response and the picture. The picture has made things a lot clearer for me. I do love a good project so i'm not afraid to get stuck in.
