Hi, is there any way of getting a ferry to Britain and from there getting another to Spain / Portugal without having to drive all the way through France? If so, has anyone done it, how much - is it too costly?, did you lose much time etc? Have two girls and they are not great for the long journeys ..thanks

Brittany Ferries operates the ferries to Spain from the UK with a choice of routes from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander and Bilbao. Travel from England to Spain with a one or two night crossing.
Above from Google.
Prices will depend on dates and other factors but it will be more expensive than a crossing from either uk or Ireland to France but you could save some travel time a diesel as you won't be driving as far.
I have time when I go for the winter so I go to Cherbourg.

excellent thanks for that. Would love to know if anyone has done this. Would be nice to spend a night in say Portsmouth, then travel down to Spain or Portugal for 10 nights and back up, but would hate to feel that large chunks of my holiday time are being wasted on ferries

It's a balance, Ireland to uk circa 4 hours, then north or South Wales to Portsmouth circa 6/8 hours then long crossing to Spain vs Ireland to Cherbourg 17/18 hrs and same to drive down to Spain.
Hence I go to France but fully understand why you want to know more about uk to Spain.
I prefer driving to being on a ferry.
I find Spain and Portugal very MH friendly not quite to France and German standards but very good compared to uk and Ireland and good value for money. Oh and better weather too

thanks for that - yea just looking on some websites and the main one as you said is Brittany - if you add in cost of return ferry from Ireland to Wales, then Wales to Plymouth or Portsmouth (4.5 hours approx for both) then Brittany Ferries - expensive enough return Plymouth to Santander, then it adds up. Had a quick look also at campsites and they dont look as good as the ones in France ... So may be better to go to France and driving down with a number of stops ....
Cant believe I am even thinking about something we wont be doing until next July or Aug... Cant let this year's holiday go ..... :D

Last year we drove a car towing 3 laser dinghies from Cherbourg to a place just north of Porto in Portugal. First overnight stop was near Nantes and the second was near Burgos in Spain. Adding in a 3rd night would make it even better. Roads were superb and it was an easy drive. Just need to add in the cost of the tolls.

cost of camp sites

We're currently in the south of Portugal. Have been travelling since June, and spent a lot of time along the north coast of Spain and the north of Portugal. We don't normally use campsites as we find them a bit regimented and the spaces are usually a bit tight for our size van. We have done a fair bit of wild camping. Most of the aires we use are free, but currently we're in a well designed aire with huge marked bays costing 8 euro including electricity and free WiFi.
In almost 2 months we've spent less than 120 euros on site fees, which means we've loads more money to spend in the great restaurants. Unless there's a specific reason why you need a campsite, you could travel quite cheaply.
Brittany Ferries is a nice route which had a Dolphin Watch organised by a charity when we used it last year. Friends of ours took their van from Spain to the UK in July and they found they had the choice of travelling standard or economy rate, so it might be worth looking very carefully at their website or even giving them a ring.
Hope this helps

We drove from Cherbourg to San Sebastián in the North of Spain with just one night stop over in July. Spent one night in a fabulous aire in Nozay.

We had a lot of driving on day 2 but that was because we didn't arrive in Cherbourg until after 4pm so didn't go too far south- we would have gone much further with an earlier arrival.

We have 3 children by the way ages 8, 6 and 4. Once they have plenty to keep them entertained and you stop every 3-4 hours to stretch legs and for the driver to have a coffee it's very doable.

We did exactly the same, only reason stopped in Nozay is the fuel light came on,headed down to Bilbao the next day. Then on to Portugal found France expensive compared to Spain.

For me and what I do, eat, drink etc I'd agree France is more expensive than Spain and Portugal and for the time I can travel the weather is certainly much better.

Or- you could consider rosslare to cherbourg, then st.nazaire (nantes) to Gijon.
In july /august it will be very busy .
I think the Gijon ferry is now back on-
We have tried this route and the Plymouth/portsmouth route to Santander and frankly
its easier just to drive down through France.
If you enjoy being at sea it can be worth doing once-
Time is obviously a big factor and with a young family i think that by Road
will maybe be better for you.
good luck

CORRECTION
The ferry from St Nazaire to gijon is not running.
The GLD Atlantique website is misleading and has not been kept up to date --sorry
