Seat belts and insurance question - please help!!!

Hi Folks,

If anyone has some information to help me I would be very grateful. I am looking at buying a 2005 6 berth camper van and I have a question about seat belts. The seat belts include 3 point driver and front passenger seat belts, 2 x 3 point seal belts for the front facing dinette seats and a lap belt on the rear facing seat of the dinette, so 5 seat belts in total. When I check the vehicle registration certificate the part for S.1 says 2 seats. Can I get insurance that will cover my wife, myself and 3 kids in the back? Last thing I want to do is buy the camper van and not be legally covered for all 5 of us. I have read loads and I'm not sure what is correct and what isn't. The top of my head is about to blow off! Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.

Cheers
Dave

I think that is a question for your Insurance company, no point saying Johnny or Tommy in Motorhome craic said you were covered should you have an accident, and you would nearly want to get it in writing seeing how Insurance company's are moving the Goal posts trying to avoid paying out Claims.

By law no belts required before 2000 after this they are mot tested to 2006,from 2006 to 2012 under side plates are part of mot, from 2012 all seats for travel must have a eu stamp on them though none do as nothing organised yet in any eu country.
Side facing seats and belts even if legal will not be covered by ins co,all the others you have will be fine if they have been tested,iv been there had the t shirt on a self build van year 2000.

thanks Roadrunner, so it doesn't matter that the Vehicle reg cert only says 2 seats, even though it has 5 seat belts, I would still be insured for 5 people seat belted? So its not an issue at all?

would all seat belts be tested at part of the CVRT or only the driver and passenger seat belts as its only says 2 seats on the vehicle reg cert?

My last van was a 4 birth but it had to lap belts in the back L shape lounge and it was insured to carry 4 people ask your insurance company and make sure it's put on your policy

.............................. the vehicle registration certificate the part for S.1 says 2 seats.........................................................

This is another issue with the work of fiction otherwise known as the RF101 (Certificate of Registration).

I have seen quite a few with the wrong number of seats (official travel seats). The figure usually filled in the Cert at S.1. is 2. The vehicles Certificate of Conformity or its original Certificate of Registration if it's a secondhand import will show the correct number of seats as authorised by the manufacturer.

The issuing of the Irish Certificate of Registration with an incorrect number of seats can cause a serious issue in a situation where a vehicle is the subject of police attention and more people are being carried than that shown on the registration certificate, remember it is a legal government document and as such will dictate how an incident may be dealt with by authorities.

I would not like to be in the situation of trying to explain to Monsieur Gendarme why I am transporting more people in my vehicle than is recorded in its 'papers' :(

I would urge anyone with the wrong number of seats recorded at S.1. to go about having the error corrected.
