Mont St Michel to La Palmyre

we drove from Disneyland Paris down to Royan, near La Rochelle last year and couldnt believe the tolls we had to pay. This year we are looking at driving from Mont St Michel down past La Rochelle again to La Palmyre. Bought a new sat nav so hoping that will help, but wandering are there much tolls going in that direction? Probably could have planned it better - we are coming into Cherbourg but changed out minds as to where we are going but had ferry booked ....

Not all Autoroutes have tolls. There are not tolls between cherbourg, St Lo, Rennes, Nantes.
There is always the original N road running very close to the Autoroute.

Tanking the N road usually means slowing down and stopping a lot as there could be many towns and villages along it. If you are not in a hurry the N road is nice for scenery etc but much slower.

I personally feel paying the tolls and covering the distance at a steady speed is better than the stop start on some routes. If you have plenty of time take the N roads.

ok thanks Mark. I remember last year it was nearly 70E from Paris through to La Rochelle. One toll alone was I think around 26E. If I have time I will try to avoid, but I suppose the question is more the fact that I am coming more from Mont St michel rather than Paris, and is that route more heavily tolled?

Mark is spot on, N roads are an effing nightmare if you want to get somewhere, nice if your not in a hurry and you can get great grub at the 'les routiers' trucker restaurants.
You will find, however, that tolls on autoroute from Le Mont St Michelle to La Rochelle will be much less costly as there are larger sections not tolled. Also your not actually going to be missing much is that region by cutting cross country, even if on N roads, so id plough on down autoroute every time.

Excellent thanks. Actually, are motorhomes more expensive to go through a toll than cars? I vaguely remember the tolls being automatic so unless there is some sensor on these tolls that tells it is a motorhome or truck, then all vehicles are the same price? Is that correct?

N roads are actually good.... It's the bloody roundabouts !
I think someone was selling roundabouts on a commission basis !
It's crazy, half dozen roundabouts in EVERY town !

danduffymallow, there is a sensor at the toll gate that gauges height. you will be priced as a classe 2 unless your a very big van and yes there is a different rate for mh THAn car. There is a site (http://www.autoroutes.fr/en/routes.htm) that will give you a fee of 40 ish euro for your journey.

This is a bit out of date but will be a reasonable guide.

Hi
Last year we travelled from Cherbourg down as far as La Rochelle. Decent roads and didn't pay a penny in tolls unlike this year following the football. Cost a fortune over the three weeks. That side should be fine regarding the tolls. Hope this helps
