Disused Portafery campsite is sad to see, pity no one can get it open again as we enjoyed last weekend in Portaferry but had to park (with permission) in one of the primary Schools.

Shower blocks etc all vandalised.

Not 100% sure but heard that local youths were throwing stuff over the wall on top off caravans and Motorhomes, breaking bottle son the site etc

I am not sure that is true, maybe Glastry can advise being our Portaferrrian :)

Why did the council close it?

 ·

The area behind the site was overgrown and totally neglected by the ards council. This allowed it to become a drinking area for the louts. The louts got brave and proceeded to throw things at the campers.the police were quoted as saying that they could not go in because there was only two of them!!The article published by the Belfast telegraph on 09/October/2010 ,goes a long way to show the attitude of the elected councillors.if someone with the necessary skills were to cut and paste the relevant sections from this,it would probably answer your query,in a way that I cannot !!
I have already posted that the area has since been well cleaned up,and while that is good it's not nearly enough.
If the attitude is still that the thugs/drinkers are too big of a problem then the site will probably remain closed.
If the drinkers were threatening the councillors property,I suspect that they would already have been dealt with.
The oxygen of publicity, if it were loud enough and sustained, just might shame the council, the tourist
Board, the police etc into actually doing something -- rant finished for the moment.
The new council have been less than distinguished in addressing the problem so far, and except the
Situation can be in someway highlighted it is not looking promising.
Looks a nice wee site though?

Thank you,i have always associated cut and paste with wallpaper and i really appreciate that you could work out what i meant and my actual level in computer skills.!
I trust this horrible article portrays to all the true level of help available from the local councillors.
the last four or five lines of which would disgrace the P6 debating class in full flow.
It must have been an incredibly slack day for the Telegraph to actually publish such a sick making load of horse sh*t.
5 years later it just looks worse.
Anyway- Thats why the wee caravan park is closed and hopefully the explanation straight from the horses mouth this time ,gives a better explanation than i could provide.

This is a question for our esteemed Portaferrian. Glastry, after seeing the free publicity the village got in the media a couple of weeks ago, I fancy at least one night in Portaferry. What's it like now in relation to that anti social behaviour? Coming down for a nosey tomorrow or possibly even this evening.

The short answer is that I do not know the current situation.___but
If you are coming to portaferry, and do not feel comfortable parking on the seafront, you are welcome to park at our house.
I will pm you my mobile and you are more than welcome!
