Our experience is limited and restricted to N. Wales. We tend to use camping club meets and their small certified locations. Have stayed at the camping and caravan club site at Bala. Pleasent site but two or three miles out of Bala, so you need to leave the site each day for touring shops etc.
There is an aire beside Conwy castle, good for day parking, although I am not sure if you can overnight at it. A pleasent and historic castle town. Well worth visiting.
Llandudno is a worthwhile Victorian seaside town. We have parked for unlimited day time parking on some of the streets leading away from the promenade. I understand that overnighting is tolerated at the eastern end of the prom, but as you know things can change.
Betws y coed is a nice place to stop, particularly if you like outdoor shops, we parked at the hotel carpark (pay) at the south end of the town, otherwise overrated.
Llanberis is a good stop, easy parking and we spent hours at the slate museum.
Blaenau Ffestiniog is a good spot to see the bleakness of the slate quarrying with an underground mine to visit and huge zip wires for the adrenaline rush.
Portmadoc is worth a visit to take a trip on the steam trains which Wales has loads of. We stayed at the C&CC site at llanystumpdwy Which again is not close to any town or village
We did various drives round the north visiting places such as Twywn, Barmouth, and of course drives through the mountains which can be a bit exciting at times.
Although it is not quite north wales, Chester is a lovely town to visit. You can park at the park and ride at Little roodee. And it is permitted to stay overnight if you wish, although they do lock the gates.
Hope this gives you a few pointers, if I can think of anywhere else or you need more info just ask, although we go away next week and wifi might be problematic.
