Make sure you get beam benders suitable for LHD and not RHD.

If you ask the tester to position them for you he might as the matching will be a good guide for him

If you are buying replacement UK lights, there are several different types so make sure you buy the right ones - electrical height adjustment, hydraulic height adjustment and some with only manual (human) height adjustment.

If they allow you to bring the beam benders and assist in positioning during the test then fine...but this may be dependant on the helpfulness of the tester at centre...could they fail you if not prefitted?

Just be careful if using Halfords beam benders as they are not very good - they are small and don't cover the full section of the headlight causing a jagged edge on the test equipment and a potential fail. My advice would be to use the large type of beam bender as per Kristan's post or if you are under pressure, use black tape to cover the whole triangular section on the right hand side of each light.

Just asking the question, the beam benders do just that depending on lhd or rhd but is the test checking only the focus at a cetain level regardless of direction?

Are there lefthand and righthand beam benders? (do they exist?)
I thought it was where you placed them!
No expert knowledge on my behalf- i even had to go out to see what is on
our own van.
AND we have beam benders which were fitted in Cherbourg about 3 years ago so that our new RH headlights did not blind the on coming traffic.
The headlights were fitted to our elderly LH DRIVE van to pass the MOT test.(i can only assume
that there must have been some change to the legislation at that date)
Anyway these "neutral" beam benders are still in place and 2 mot tests later no one
has mentioned them!! -so they must be ok then?
Or maybe i should have fitted left hand ones?
don't you just love regulations?

A remarkable similarity except in price!
I was only fooling ,there is no such thing as beam benders for left or right,
its just how they are placed !!
Good Good news, from 2017 we can MOT anywhere in europe,I can see the fur and feathers flying
already.
ah ,but -will we still be in the Gang?

They are not proposals, if we remain in the euro zone this is what is going to happen.
(and rightly so, in my opinion)
Vehicle mot tests will be available across europe. HURRAY

Can find evidence that there are new regulations being introduced in 2017, but nothing about being able to test a vehicle across europe.

You are right,I just telephoned to check, and the matter is now on hold. From the Blog (matter of testing),I
took is as a done deal that the across europe testing was going to happen-I was wrong!
Maybe after the vote on uk membership it will come to life again .

Blog -Matter of testing (03001239000) open 7:30 to 6:00.
my apologies for duff information.

Shame it's on hold, I have met loads of people who have to take an annual trip back to the uk just for an mot. I know testing standards are different around Europe but surely there could be a minimum standard that would be acceptable to the insurance companies. I suppose one of the issues is how to check if a vehicle is currently tested, pnc information etc.

I am one of those who have to get the car back from Spain to the UK for MOT, the Spanish won't touch it for their ITV/MOT test as it isnt registered in Spain and it cant pass the headlight test as it is a RHD vehicle, that was the reasons I got from their MOT station.

For the cross country testing to work it will mean a standard across each country and from what I have read on here there appears to be a big difference in what would pass in NI/UK/ROI never mind France/Spain etc. In Spain they also MOT caravans and trailers over a certain size, so would every other European country adopt that system as well!

I agree with Heanorboy. I did the same: got two "Irish" headlamps from a van breaker. I use these most of the time in Ireland and switch them for the LHD ones if we're going abroad. Only cost €60.

As I said to Jim earlier. Was parked up beside a GB van in France. His solution was to use 3 strips of insulating tape about 3 inches long, stuck in the right position. Cost him around 0.1p...
