If it is just a stop over near the ferry that you want you could try the municipal site in st mare eglise.

If you are using Stena you don't arrive in Cherbourg until about 5 pm (except Sunday) so this site is close enough. If you are sailing with Irish ferries you arrive at about 11am and can drive much further the first day if you want to.

Be aware if you are anywhere in France, especially Normandy at the moment that filling stations are running out of fuel, especially diesel.
This is due to the national strike and the refineries being out of action. Long queues for fuel at the moment and rationed to 20 litres or in some cases stations completely out of fuel and shut.

We experienced a similar problem in 2010. We found that the smaller filling station in the country usually had fuel but rationed it like you say jonkil

I ended up going to three stations in 3 villages in a row to get close to a tank full.

if near st mare eglise the municipal site is better value than the aire

the aire is 8 euro per night plus 4 euro parking during day
site is 15 euro

we are heading out on Tuesday and st mare eglise will probably be first stop

grand camp Maisie gets a god name and quite a few others along that coast

Concur Bob,
Both are excellent, never stayed on the site on St.Mare Eglise but on the Aire there. Will keep that in mind for again.

Going down the western side of the pensilua this time and South towards the Spanish border.

were sailing with Irish ferries so we'll be into Cherbourg at 11am.
I want to travel about 1 1/2 hours and hopefully stay near the landing beaches for a night.
I just want somewhere to head for the first day till i'm used to driving on france etc.

the next day we'll head down the country and see where the road bring us then onto St Jean the Monts the next day for 5 night which I've booked then make or way back up the west cost as were sailing out of roscoff.

Finding the french websites very odd. I tried to book a place last night that I found on the acsi site it said €38.50 a night it had a bar, water park and all the attractions.
by the time I went through the booking process it was up to €77 they even had a €23 booking fee 🇧🇭

Trevor,
If you only need a stop for the night there is tons of aires down the peninsula.
Grand camp Maise has a nice aire, close to town and the harbour and many motorhomes stop off at the harbour too if aire is full.
The municipal site at Bayeaux is lovely too.
When do you leave for France ?

Possible reasons for the price difference.

No ASCI discounts for July
Sites charge tourist tax of around €0.20 per person (over 6) per day.
Awnings can be charged for.
Additional people can b charged for.
Larger pitches can be more expensive than advertised price.

You could have

http://www.camping-utahbeach.com/en/, not sure min nights restriction but there are 2 Aires close by, one on the D421 and the other just off it

Utah Beach

Aire Camping-Car Park

OUVERTE. Dans la Manche, à Sainte Marie du Mont, au pied des plages du débarquement, l'aire CAMPING-CAR...

Ouverture : Toute l'année 24h/24

(+33) 0 805 69 48 69
- See more at: http://www.camping-car-park.com/#sthash.jVfXceLx.dpuf

see also
http://www.camping-car-park.com/node/331

The other Aire is on the D421, c 200 mtrs from the Museum, which is well worth a visit, if interested, at the end of the bus parking.
