Hi, I got two penalty points in the post today for doing 93km/h on a 100km/h road in Co. Laois. My camper weighed 2800kg when I weighed it for the Doe test last year. Is this summons correct? if so what are the speed limits for campers?

Hi,
I phoned this morning and was told if I send in my DOE and case reference number showing that the camper was under 3500kg the points will be removed. hopefully that is the end of it.

(try speeding with that combo ) So if I see a van with sparks coming out the back of a Motorhome I'll know It's you. Like something out of the Flinstone's Movie. .
On a more serious note, on the (rf101 down as an n1 instead of m ), I think this is the guts of the problem N1 Is classed as being Commercial which comes under the 80 Km's limit, taken from the Data base in Shannon. I Have tried to get My rf101 changed three times with no luck, others have got it done with no bother at all, So I just didn't bother anymore till they ( RSA ) Or ( Shannon ) decide to do a mass change of all the incorrect rf101. In the meantime I just drive at 80 Km's limit, with the price of Diesel I don't think I want to drive any faster

That sounds far too easy when dealing with that crowd
I hope you get it sorted

THIS is the piece of legislation which underpins the 80Kph rule for certain vehicles, do take time to read it it's only a few paragraphs.
Motor Caravans are a type of vehicle NOT included in the type of vehicles mentioned.
Therefore motor caravans IRRESPECTIVE of whatever weight they may be are currently only subject to the speed limits set out for ordinary cars.
It's a gap in the legislation yet to be fixed, just like the roadworthiness testing requirement was.
BTW it's important to have your motor caravan correctly classified as a category M (passenger) vehicle and not a category N (goods) as has been seen this can lead to difficulties with computerised systems which use info from the national vehicle database to determine how the vehicle should be treated in relation to its maximum speed permitted and probably other stuff like tolls etc.
I got 2 penalty points for doing 90 in 100 zone in the RV on the way to Kilkenny a few weeks back, saw the go safe van looked at my speed and just smiled and drove on past so when the letter arrived I was not a happy camper after many emails first to go safe then on to the Gardi at the fixed charge processing office got a positive result back today from them
" as per statutory instrument 75, camper vans which exceed 3,500 KG in weight appear to no longer be restricted to a reduced speed limit. ". And the fixed charge noticed has been cancelled.
All the other statutory instrument mentioned in previous post ie SI 9 of 2005 is no longer applicable, you may wish to consult Statutory Instrument 75 of 2012 in future in case any changes are made to reflect restrictions applicable to vehicle's over 3,500 kg's
So now I can drive on as normal must just remember when towing that the 80 km limit applies...
