What is the correct volume of Gear Oil in a 1997/1998 model 230 Ducato, 5 Speed 2.5TD?
.....the box with the bolt on 5th Gear.

Owners Manual doesn't say,it gives the type as 75/90 but nothing on volume.

There's a level nut on the Diff,
On my van (2001 Ducato LHD) it's just under the drive shaft that goes to passenger side, I think it's 22mm nut with Allenkey in middle, so you can use either,

Park on level surface, ideally over a pit and open nut, add oil until it comes out the hole, as regards qty from empty I don't know

I believe the advice is to go with 2.7l itres (which is higher than Fiat originally specified) to minimise the risk of the 5th gear failure (splash oil lubrication). Make sure the gearbox oil is exactly as per the original Fiat spec as the motorfactor may specify newer spec oil which does not offer the same level of protection.

Thanks Mad Max and 2424 for the info.
I previously looked for this oil level inspection nut but couldn't see it.
Will check for it again and change with the Fiat manual specification oil.

The fifth gear issue is a concern but I guess "worry about it when it happens" should be the plan.

Regards,
Joe

Changed the gearbox oil in my elderly Ducato.
The most difficult part is taking off and replacing the panel under the engine. 6 big bolts and 2 nuts and much creeping and crawling on the ground.
Approx. 2.8 Litres came out.
Refilled with 2.7 litres as suggested.
Filled it through the reverse gear switch with a funnel and a piece of rubber tubing.
The gears are still changing anyway !!!!!!!
Thanks again guys.
