Gear Box replacement VW 1990 1.6 turbo diesel westfalia

Hi all,

Just joined up with the forum a few days ago and just looking for some advice. We have a 1990 VW Westfalia camper van and we noticed that 1st gear was constantly slipping out and couldn't drive it in 1st at all. Brought it to garage who looked at it who said gear box needs to be changed. He recommended to enquire in Naas Gearboxes who told me the vehicle was too old for them. Our garage was thought the official VW dealerships locally would be really expensive and to ask around on forums etc. The van has been a lifeline for our family (especially since our youngest was diagnosed with a severe nut allergy and don't really eat out in takeaways etc anymore) and don't really have a huge amount to spend so was just looking for any suggestions/places to go or if someone had to do something similar themselves, thanks in advance for any help,

I would think a secondhand Gearbox would be the cheapest option. It might not be a bad Idea to ask the same question on a VW Forum. Members love to help each other.

Can the gearbox not be removed and that one gear fixed? there seem to be quite a few eastern Europeans repairing Gearboxes in the North quite cheaply.

http://northernretros.co.uk

hi, you could try and ask for advice on the VW forums as suggested but also this link above. I know a few VW fanatics who drive older VW's than are members of the northern retros group, they are both also in the motor repair trade so they might be able to give you advice.

Hi,
Probably can get you a S/H gearbox locally.
Guy breaks VW, has quite a few bits of older stuff.... But you're not a member and I can't PM you and I don't want to put the guys number on the forum.
I'm in Donegal.
Email me at jonkil(AT)iol(DOT)ie and I'll give you his number, or better still..... Join the forum... Well worth the subs.
Hopefully you can decode that email address.

I have a similar van (mine has been converted to 1.9TD, but uses the same gearbox as 1.6). The best forums are brick-yard.co.uk and club8090.co.uk - both have a wealth of info on them (just watch out for the banter!). They are mainly England/Scotland/Wales based, but not all. There is a guy on their called Aiden Talbot who specialises in VW T3 gearboxes - he may be able to advise you whether or not it is repairable as that may be a better option. Hope this helps, Mike.
