EU roaming charges

Mobile phone roaming fees in the EU will fall sharply from tomorrow, the last step before they are abolished completely for Europeans next year.

The European Union will scrap phone roaming charges outright on 15 June, 2017 ending fees loathed by millions of holidaymakers and business travellers across Europe.

"We're in the home stretch now before the end of roaming charges in 2017," Andrus Ansip, the European Commission's Vice President for the digital single market said.

"This is not only about Europeans saving money, this is about bringing down barriers in the digital single market".

With Saturday's change, European users travelling on the continent will pay no more than an extra €0.05 per minute for calls, €0.02 per SMS and €0.05 per megabyte of data.

Currently, the cap is more than triple that at €0.19 per minute for calls, €0.06 per SMS and €0.20 per megabyte of data.

"We welcome the slashing of roaming prices," said Monique Goyens, head of the European Consumer Organisation.

"Today's consumers do not understand why crossing a border in Europe has to result in soaring phone and internet costs," she said.

The end of roaming charges is a key element of the EU's effort to create a far more unified market in Europe, especially for digital and communication services.

The EU mooted plans last year that would allow travellers to get online streaming services like Netflix or BBC iPlayer when abroad, something currently blocked.

I wonder if there will be any changes to charges when traveling outside the EU.
EE charged something like £1.40 per minute when we were in Thailand so I bought a Thai SIM card for £15 with loads of minutes and data on it.

We don't have to cross the border to incur roaming - it has happened to me in Portstewart and Benone :o

In my opinion it won't change a thing, three will continue with the feels like home. Despite the scare mongering the remain campaign are dishing out I don't think we will go to war with Europe, no border controls will be put up in Ireland, we already do show our passports going to and from Europe and Europe will not reintroduce border restrictions going by car across all the member states ( too many eu citizens to worry about some tourists)

In France it's called debate. Friends get round a table over a meal, argue like blazes, then end up agreeing with each other. Mad.

No point in it on here as it doesn't effect everyone.

It could affect all of us.

It very much could. Could affect the border, could affect the Sterling against the Euro, Martin McGuiness muttered something about a United Ireland referendum if we vote to leave. Scotland could again go for independance to remain in the euro zone if we voted leave, therefore us staying in it might find it harder to enter Scotland. Us leaving it might find it harder or more of an annoyance to visit ROI and more costly, we might lose ROI visitors to NI.

We could all go to hell in a handcart.

There will be no border reimposed, it's written in the various good Friday agreements, as for a United Ireland staying in will only achieve a United States of Europe, more chance of a United Ireland if we vote out. The exchange rate will stabilise no matter what it wasn't too long ago it was £1 to €1 . The remain camp have said we can't be in NATO sorry but we were in it before the EU, so we can be outside again. Are we likely to go to war with our European neighbours as in 1914 and 1939, not a chance despite what dodgy Dave hints at. Can we trade around the world without being in the EU yes of course we can, we may have our goods which we export taxed until agreements are in place but likewise we can tax imports thus helping the UK manufacturing. The world will not stop rotating if we leave, I really do believe that should we leave then others will also leave as its getting too expensive for the bigger countries as they are supporting all the smaller ones.

One thing to bear in mind, I have a home in Spain as well as one here in the UK am I worried about it, no not for a minute, will I still be able to go to it if we leave and will others be able to have a two week package holiday in the costas as well as motorhomers touring France etc of course they will it's all scare mongering and I think financially we will end up better off.

There you got me on my soap box!

sh*t, I only asked how roaming charges would be affected if we voted to leave.

We are leaving for France on 23rd. Going to sign off a little house we have there & just sold. Hence the motorhome.
If we vote to leave, will we be allowed to return home? :-/
