I have restored a 1984 Auto trail Having worked in Motorsport looking after large RV's I have always isolated the vehicle battery from the vehicle system with the exception of the fridge. And carry an emergency generator for non electric sites.

My question is this. With the advent of modern smart battery chargers can I connect a smart charger to beach battery and forget the Zig unit altogether. I am totally LED powered and have some 240 volt items as mentioned the only thing connected to the vehicle battery is a fridge for use when the engine is running.

I don't have one, as you say, a smart battery charger will do the trick. I found a guy through a vw camper forum that only sells the better range of stuff, and I've bought most of my kit off him, even wiring for double leisure battery setup and the like. travelvolts is the company name. my 12volt fridge will work for several days off the batteries, I have a cheap ebay voltmeter just to keep an eye on voltage when the fridge is on.
