Breakdown cover?

 ·
Posted: 07.04.2016  ·  #1
Hi team,
We're heading to the UK in July and France in September. Our motorhome insurance doesn't cover us for bringing our m/h back if there's a serious breakdown. The Irish Ferries/Allianz insurance deal won't help as we used Tesco vouchers when booking the crossings (weird!).
Can anyone recommend a company that offers a good deal on single trip breakdown cover INCLUDING getting us and the m/h back if need be?
Thanks in advance!

Depends on where you are. If you are in the south you may find you need European cover. If in the north national cover from one of the companies.

also depends on the length and weight of your motorhome.

Ours is 7.6m and 4250KG. We have European breakdown cover with repatriation from LV.

Very few provide repatriation for over 7m 3500KG.

ADAC do annual cover with repatriation not sure about a single trip though. Would it not be more economical to take out a yearly policy

tony ADAC is cheaper than trip/short term cover cover from any of the UK companies. I, and other craic members, have been with them for several years. They are the german equivalent to AA where it is you who has the cover and not the vehicle. It is Europe wide.

Hi

How did you get on ? I don't see any option for an Irish resident to get full benefits for a larger camper including repatriation ?

A Response from ADAC this morning : now i'm starting to get worried, my motor home has developed an ignition problem and i am on Saturdays boat to France.

thank you for your message and interest in joining ADAC.

Please note that the ADAC (Plus) membership provides a reduced range of services and benefits for members residing outside Germany. The classic membership covers breakdown assistance in
Germany only.

ADAC Plus members will not be entitled to benefits such as spare parts dispatch, vehicle customs
duties and scrapping, credits and cash service in Germany and in their country of residence.

In view of the above, would you please verify whether a local organisation offers a product that better suits your needs.

Under the FIA umbrella organisation, ADAC cooperates with other automobile clubs. We believe that your local automobile club might offer products that provide more comprehensive protection.

Please do not hesitate to get back to us with any questions.

I wish they told us what we are covered for instead of what we are not covered for. We are with them a number of years and they never told us of the reduced cover, wouldn't know only for seeing it here in the site.
Judging by that response they don't want our custom .

The company that Mark posted,Liverpool and Victoria (Britannia Rescue),is good value and seems to tick
most of the boxes, including older vans like us.
their website is worth a look.

ADAC cover the recovery and repatriation which is really what most require, the things such as parts being sent etc are not essential nor covered by anyone else. The main benefit over all the competition is that the individual is covered for whichever vehicle they are in and not the car. I looked earlier at multivehicle and personal cover and the AA/RAC etc are all around £300. The individual cover does work as my wife and step daughter had to get recovered last week when the alternator belt came off the stepdaughters car, she rang ADAC and they sent the AA out and recovered them to the local dealer no problem.

I looked at the option a couple of years ago when I was with Britannia to have multiple vehicles covered and to get europe on more than 1 vehicle meant individual policies with them (3 cars and 1 motorhome!) so for me ADAC ticks all the boxes.

Hi all, just say this conversation an hour after being off the phone with my insurance provider - Stuart Insurances. I knew when I got insured with them that they also provided a breakdown assist service as part of it - if the camper breaks down while abroad, they will send someone out, and if they cannot fix over 1 hour at side of road, they will bring back to garage. However, I asked Stuart Insurances is it possible to bump up this insurance to include repatriation. They said yes, and came back to me with a price of just 10 Euro extra. The only thing is this - the insurance covers the van and not the people in it - they will repatriate the van but the people will have to make their own way home or get travel insurance.
I know someone out there has probably done this but assuming I get travel insurance separately, am I adequately covered? Thanks

Stuarts have just bumped up their cover to include repatriation as standard. The price for the standard policy is gone from €315 to €325 to account for this.

I've attached the page from the summary of cover I got which details what's covered under repatriation.

Thanks, as earlier mentioned I would it expect it to cost more than €500 to get a camper home.

I have this with Dolman at the moment, we're off in the morning so I'll have to accept what I have for this trip, Thanks. I might see about using a northen Ireland address of a friend so at least it would be back in the right land masse if things go wrong. :-)

StephenC thanks for that. 500 Euro, does seem like a lot if you are in the middle of France and you want it repatriated does it?
Also, a question I forgot to ask. Say you get towed to the nearest garage who says that some part has gone, and the garage is charging a crazy ridiculous price for it to be replaced. Can you say no way, and have it repatriated? Or do you have no choice but to pay it? Or to put it another way, what would the reasons have to be, from an insurance perspective, that a person can opt for repatriation?
