Italian Lakes

This is intended as a very brief overview of our holiday trip in Summer 2015 to the Italian lakes (Maggiore, d’Orta, Lugano and Garda). It may be helpful to others planning a similar trip.

Our motorhome is a Rapido 7065FF 2 berth X250 Fiat 130hp 2.3 litre 6 speed manual, GVW 3850kg and running at or close to maximum.

We travelled a total of 3339 miles and used 565.97 litres of diesel giving an overall average of 26.78mpg. The fill to fill measure was almost exactly the same as the on board computer average – 26.78mpg compared to 26.8mpg on the computer. We travel at around 50mph on main roads and 55/60mph on motorways.

For cooking, fridge etc we used 25.68 litres of LPG (at a cost of Euro0.37 per litre in Belgium) into the Gaslow refillable tank.

Diesel fuel costs at the time were typically Euro1.20 per litre in France, Euro1.40 in Switzerland, Euro1.55 in Italy, Euro1.25 in Austria, Euro1.20 in Germany, Euro1.05 in Luxembourg, Euro1.15 in Belgium and Euro1.35 in Ireland. These costs vary over time and the relationship between countries also changes over time. A good site for price checking is http://www.fuel-prices-europe.info/. This site also gives LPG prices and the type of LPG connection.

Our only toll was the M50 in Dublin (Euro3.20) and the Swiss motorway toll (Euro32.50 for 10 days over 3500kg)

We left home on 24th May and returned on 16th July so a total of 54 nights including 2 nights on the ferry.

Our outgoing route was Irish Ferries Rosslare to Cherbourg at a cost of Euro184.00 including cabin.
Our return route was Irish Ferries landbridge – tunnel Calais to Folkstone and ferry Holyhead to Dublin a cost of Euro301.00 excluding cabin.

We used a Halifax Clarity credit card for most purchases as it does not have any foreign exchange fee. We also used the same card as an ATM card to withdraw cash. There is no foreign or ATM fee on cash withdrawals. We did however have to pay interest on the cash withdrawals. Interest rate is 12% per annum. For us, taking into account the time between drawing cash and the subsequent payment of the credit card bill, in full, the next month the overall interest cost worked out at a little under 1.5% of the cash withdrawn. Bearing in mind that we got the wholesale bank exchange rate and there were no other fees this worked out a good deal. Over the whole trip the average wholesale bank rate was Euro1.396 to £1 sterling for purchases whereas the average cash withdrawal rate including interest was 1.375.

It is worth noting that we did not find any Bureau de Change and many banks in Italy do not exchange foreign currency. Those that do, appear to give good rates but charge a small fixed transaction fee.

Site costs in Italy using ASCI (note we were partly off season) were in many cases not much higher than Aires so we stayed on sites in preference. The quality of many of the Aires we found was low so we went elsewhere. Of the total of 52 nights excluding the ferry we stayed 15 nights on Aires which ranged from free to Euro20.00 per night. The total cost of Aires was Euro152.50 with 3 nights free thus giving an average of Euro12.71 for those that charged.

The other 37 nights were spent on campsites which ranged in price from Euro11.05 to Euro27.00 (in Germany Black Forest). The total cost of campsites was Euro730.78 thus giving an average of Euro19.75. This was influenced by the fact that, after 1 July we were into high season and were paying Euro25.00 per night in Riva.

The overall campsite cost per night for the 52 nights was Euro883.28 or an average of Euro16.99 per night.

Taking into account ONLY the ferry, fuel, tolls and overnight costs the total bill came to Euro2150 for the entire trip.

Site is small, would only hold about 20 caravans/MH. It is located on the Tombole end of Riva about 10 minutes walk from a supermarket, 5 minutes walk to the beach/marina and 30 minutes walk to the town centre/ferry terminal. Camping Villa Speranza, N45.88048, E10.86064, family run very clean. Family also run adjacent B&B.

The Riva Aire is just across the road; Euro12 per day based on carpark type barrier and pay machine; plus showers at Euro1 each; no EHU; N45.87954, E10.85899; small cafe and child play area.

very comprehensive there, whilst we didn't get into that much detail with costs, our similar trip to Como last year, stopping in Switzerland and France, we did 2400 in 17 days, averaging £147 per day in total costs (ferry, diesel, food, spending money), 32mpg @70mph.

Look forward to these longer holidays!!! :D

Just wanted to get an idea of costs v a conventional holiday. Certainly couldn't do over 7 weeks in a B&B or hotel at the same cost. I didn't count the food as we have to eat wherever we are. As for eating out and spending money I dread to think. SWMBO has a thing for clothes and shoes - what better place to go than Italy!!!

there's a story there, I had intended driving sensibly the whole holiday, but after getting caught with our very chatty dog kennel owner, we were left with 4 minutes leeway leaving Markethill (kennels) travelling to Rosslaire. so with all the roadworks, the wife had a work related stop and we had to fill with diesel, we had a 95mph run down the motorway, not knowing we'd be sitting in Rosslaire for an hour anyhow.

That was the end of the attempts at fuel economy/looking after the van. With the mileage we were covering on the continent, the speed always crept up to the 70/80mph range on the motorways. I could probably get better mpg without the roofbox, bike rack, 20 inch wheels and sticking to 60 mph.

the 32mpg is genuine average over the whole holiday, we did log mileage and all fuel stops. 600 miles to a tank is normal for a sensibly driven transporter, we were getting 550 miles easily fully loaded, and I didn't run the tank down too low because I didn't want to risk running out.

check out Magic Lake Camping (they're on FB and tripadvisor), it really is hard to beat. every time we ordered Mojitos, the bartender disappeared to his allotment to get fresh mint for us (we didn't realise this til late in the holiday), but this sums up their attention to detail, nothing is too much for them to do. Our neighbour on the site had cracked his motorbike carrier, again this was sorted for him without any hassle. It might be further away from Bellagio, etc than you would ideally be, but everything is just a water taxi visit away. toilets/showers were immaculate. it's a small site, so best to book if possible, but we didn't in June and got staying no probs. they have a delivery service from the local takeaways, which is restaurant quality (it's Italy after all....), we only cooked every other night for this reason.

avoid travelling in rush hour if possible, they're mental and expect everyone to drive at 10mph over the speed limit, regardless of what you're driving.

Gravedona is an easy walk, and is probably like their equivalent to Newcastle with trendy cafes and stuff if you like your icecreams/buns/etc., we ate at Cardinello in Gravedona, as a special treat, food was stunning and fairly reasonable, given surroundings/quality, probably similar prices to local hotels.

Cilico is at the top of the lake, and it seemed to be where the locals went to chill/sunbathe/windsurf on their days off. There's a grassy area slightly out of town, we only found it because the town was like a ghost town, so we followed where everyone else seemed to be going, we spent a very chilled afternoon just watching the world go by, people watching.

it was unseasonably warm when we were there, so we started getting thunder and lightning after lunch every day. we moved on a few days early because of this. on our way through Switzerland the wife insisted on seeing Interlaken. I realised I had heard of Lauterbrunnen (valley of the 74 waterfalls) which was only a few miles away. we ended up staying here a few days on the way home, visiting the restaurant from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", Piz Gloria, and doing a bit of mountain walking. If you're travelling this route, it's well worth the detour. We ended up on a train travelling under the Alps to get to Interlaken, which was a bit of a surprise, but the satnav took us that way.

Again if travelling the France way,Beaune is well worth a stop, it was a municipal site we stayed at but there's parts of the town are olde worldy beautiful. we vowed to go back some time to see all it's sights.

PS I really must do a proper write up of our Como trip last year elsewhere on the forum.
